Such a good article. Generative art is such a cool thing that’s recently been exploding in popularity because of how good it’s starting to become, but it really does beg the question if the advancement of AI-driven art will devalue real, human-drawn art.

A couple of years ago when AI was really kicking off a lot of people were saying that the future of a world with AI would be able to do a ton of things, but at least it can’t do artistic thinking like writing or drawing. That’s humanity’s turf… But here we are.

And now it’s “at least AI can’t write code or automatically create other powerful AI without human interference” but I guess I’ll see you in 20 years about that.

AIs like DALL-E are obviously not going to replace human artists, but I very much expect them to become a tool that artists use. We’re already seeing AI being used for stuff like voicing characters in games, and I can see this sort of stuff to start being useful in generating initial character designs that the artist fleshes out. The AI can act as a great tool for inspiration this way.

However, this notion that “AI will always be limited in fundamental ways” is pure nonsense. Human brains aren’t magic, and there’s absolutely no reason to believe that artificial minds won’t be able to do all the same things that the human mind does in the future.

I’m also not convinced that AI generated art is any more empty than current manufactured art like ads or pop music that we’re constantly subjected to. The fact that it was produced by a human doesn’t magically imbue it with any deep meaning. Most of our culture is superficial and meaningless, AIs aren’t going to change that in any significant way.

Finally, it’s worth noting that any meaning is ultimately in the eye of the beholder. If an AI generates something that triggers a response from me, then whatever the AI produced has meaning to me personally. It doesn’t matter that the image or a piece of music was generated purely mechanically. I can appreciate it the same way I can appreciate a landscape or a beautiful sunset.
