People Twitter@sh.itjust.works•Ever traveled from Poland all the way to Banana?
21·2 months agoYes, actually I do expect reparations (“free handouts”) and free asylum for climate refugees.
Maybe you should ask why Australia decided to wrangle Tuvalus independence instead of just making a better offer. And also, to ask yourself for whom exactly this deal is “the best option”. Not the majority of the Tuvaluan population.

People Twitter@sh.itjust.works•Ever traveled from Poland all the way to Banana?
3·2 months agoSo you’re conveniently ignoring the protectorate status? And the fact that Tuvalu doesn’t really have another choice? And that this is just one in a long line of “anti-China deals” Australia is forcing on its island neighbors?

People Twitter@sh.itjust.works•Ever traveled from Poland all the way to Banana?
9·2 months agoTuvalu is now obliged to let Australia oversee its foreign policy. In exchange, Australia is “generously” allowing a number of Tuvaluans per year to flee climate disaster and settle in Australia. The climate disaster that Australia as a coal giant has no interest in stopping, or better yet, compensate the island nations for instead of slowly absorbing their governments and populations

16·2 months agoWhat Australia is doing to Tuvalu for example is also completely unforgivable. Holding a country in a precarious situation hostage is not the lesson we should have learned after China expanded its influence in the pacific

I wish I had the confidence and determination of my brother who singlehandedly forced my entire extended family to exclusively use Signal amongst each other He basically blackmailed them lmao but it worked and after 1 month of adjusting noone complained
I don’t understand why there’s so many people who don’t want Lemmy to grow. I came here because I wanted a freeer more decentralised web for everyone, not just me.
didn’t you read 3rd step? Spirit can’t return, Spirit disintegrates!

8·3 months agoWhoa, this is really cool! I can tell it took a ton of work.
I made this little map a while ago that was supposed to be an extremely basic viablity study of high speed rail lines in europe, visualised on a map. It’s cool being able to compare it with real life!

3·3 months agoeh, kinda? Decentralisation means one instance can learn from the failures of another, and there’s bo one thing that can bring the entire Fediverse down. But that’s a worst case scenario.
What I fear is this: A spike of interest in the fediverse leads to many instances being overwhelmed, and the general newbie experience quickly turns many people away, leading to lots of people leaving with a sour taste. In the meantime, instances successfully adapt and new ones spring up, but most users aren’t coming back.
Imo that’s a more realistic scenario than some grandiose failure, and you could say it’s already happened several times.

27·3 months agoWell you have to wonder if at a support so high Wikimedia couldn’t skip the “fight and win” stage to earn some goodwill which might get them more favourable terms. In open confrontation, everyone loses. Takes energy away from everything else and generates a ton of bad publicity.

Europe@feddit.org•Germany calls for end to EU unanimity rule to stop bloc 'standstill'English
3·3 months agoUnfortunately the principle of degressive proportionality of votes per country to population of country is enshrined in EU law. It’s free to interpret that principle as it wishes but it can’t do away with it. My favourite proposal got axed in the 2010s: it would have given citizens two votes, one for a national list and one for a transnational list - I think the idea was that 75% of seats would be filled by winners of national lists and 25% by those of transnational lists. Unfortunately it died along with many other proposed reforms.

I don’t get it
