Is there really that much advantage to isolating these apps in a work profile? I’ve been using them under a work profile for a while now and I see not much point to it since I never practically disable them for concern over missing out on important notifications. They have as much access to device APIs as they do in the personal profile anyways so they can track my phone just as well. It just becomes inconvenient moving content between both profiles.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What was your favourite April Fools joke of this year?
321·3 months agoFor me it was the announcement in the Blender’s official Discord server about its acquisition by Affinity, renaming it to Affinity 3D.
(Edited to include the announcement text)
Canva Announces Acquisition of Blender to Launch ‘Affinity 3D’
@everyone Canva announced the acquisition of the Blender Foundation’s development assets and core engineering team. This landmark move expands the “Affinity” creative ecosystem following Canva’s purchase of Serif last year. Rebranded as “Affinity 3D,” the software will serve as the foundational 3D powerhouse within Canva’s subscription model. CEO Melanie Perkins stated the move is designed to bridge the gap between professional 3D rendering and the intuitive, drag-and-drop accessibility that defines the Canva brand.
The integration into the Affinity ecosystem promises a seamless, unified workflow. Users will gain non-destructive, real-time links between Affinity Photo, Designer, and their 3D projects. The engineering team plans to overhaul the interface to mirror the streamlined Affinity aesthetic while retaining the high-performance cycles and geometry nodes power-users rely on. Canva has emphasized that the open-source spirit of Blender will be preserved through an “Affinity Community Edition,” keeping the core architecture free for students and individual creators.
The acquisition acts as a catalyst for the “Canva Magic 3D” generative suite. By training AI models on Affinity 3D data, Canva will introduce text-to-3D generation directly into its browser-based editor. Users can generate custom models, textures, and lighting via prompts, which can then be imported into Affinity 3D for refined manual sculpting. Analysts believe this positions Canva as a direct competitor to Adobe’s Substance suite, creating an end-to-end powerhouse that simplifies 3D for everyone from social media marketers to professional VFX artists.
I love the unique artwork of this manga. The sketchy style seems like a fusion of classic folktale illustrations and modern webcomics.
The horses are well drawn which is actually an incredible feat. Plus the way you drew the grim looks in the eyes of the protagonist is spot on.
The story itself is intriguing. I can feel the lore is heavy by the first impressions. Though not much was revealed plot-wise, I could still sympathise with the dad and the son in their situation.
An awesome debut overall! I’ll be looking forward for the upcoming chapters

0·4 months agoIs it true? I’ve been lately looking out for a new atomic distro but I’ve heard it seems it’s not developer friendly with the sandboxing and extra efforts to get apt/rpm working. I am relatively new to Linux and stuck with Mint for now so I can’t add anything to it.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Do you backup your docker images?English
4·5 months agoI can attest to it. Lately my server needed to be repaired and got its entire disk wiped. Fortunately I managed to back up my compose files and bind mounts. After reinstalling the OS and transferring the backed up contents, I ran ‘docker compose up’ and eventually everything came back up exactly how they were when being backed up. Even the Postgres backup of Joplin was recovered purely from its bind mount.

I didn’t want to believe it, but sadly it’s true. It’s going to take a long time for me to search for all my files, but if it’s the only right way to go, then so be it.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Transferring data from Windows to Linux during migration
16·6 months agoDespite the poor name, File History is actually a legitimate backup solution offered by Windows.
I’m stating that the vendor lock-in nature of this backup prevents me from directly importing this backup from Windows to Linux.
I think I have misued the word ‘critical’ in my comment. I wish to correct it by stating I simply have documents and photos important to me that I wish to preserve like any other person. It’s just that I am not in a financial situation to keep three separate copies of my data, excluding the hard drive I’m lending only for the migration.
I also want to state that I am not looking for a backup solution in this post. I simply wish to transfer my files from Windows to Linux and was hoping for a tool to automate the process of doing so.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Transferring data from Windows to Linux during migration

Linux@lemmy.ml•Transferring data from Windows to Linux during migration
01·6 months agoMy only viable backup strategy for Windows so far is to use the File History option in the Control Panel to create incremental backups of my system. There are two issues with this approach with regard to using it for migration:
- Not all directories to be backed up are accounted for. I’ve set the backup so that only the most important files in the default directories are saved in case something happens to the system. I could consider manually including the missing entries if not for the second issue:
- The backups can only be read within the File History menu. The backups themselves are stored in a semi-gibberish manner so it is impractical for me to have it read in Linux, unless there is already a solution for it. Otherwise these backups force me to continue using Windows.
I understand the importance of backups and regularly practice doing so, even if not to the fullest extent. However this scenario is different, where I am actively migrating all my data to a different platform. I need to make sure no data is left behind in the process, including data that I normally don’t back up separately, like user configuration for applications or game saves.
What I am looking for is a program that readily makes my Windows data ready for migration to Linux by fetching the files from directories where user data and application data is stored and stores it in a platform-agnostic manner in some external location.

I’ve seen this topic covered briefly in one of CGP Grey’s videos. The video also gives a POV of a person with this syndrome. The POV was surprisingly interesting to watch and I was wondering if there are other similar recorded experiments.
