Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Would AI Be Hated As Much If It Wasn't As Resource Intensive?
5·2 days agoYes. Cause the resource intensity isn’t the main problem people have with it.
It’s the theft.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•is it weird to have your own religious beliefs system
4·3 days agoArguably, even the most devout of devout have their own unique mixture of beliefs, because the scripture is inconsistent and has parts that are unclear.
I’d say that literally everyone has a unique set of beliefs, even atheists will hold into some superstitions, often unaware they are.
I’m atheist, I still do “touch wood” (a pagan thing that got coopted by UK Protestantism, that to prevent a jinx or bring a blessing, you say “touch wood” and tap the nearest wooden thing), cause it does something in my brain, a comforting effect

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•is it weird to have your own religious beliefs system
1·3 days agoMixed beliefs have always existed, they’re nothing new.
And just cause religion is sold as a package, doesn’t mean people use everything in it. How many Jewish people do you know that go “I’m Jewish, but I eat pork”? It’s pretty darn common. How many Christians do you know that wear mixed fabrics?

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•We should popularize using the guillotine as a symbol of the common man.
1·3 days agoWell yes, but that’s cause there’s no good definition of it really.
It’s either too loose as to be useless, or so narrow as to be useless

11·4 days agoViolence is any act which removes the rights from another being, this includes the right to live, this includes the right to autonomy.
Even vegans commit violence, plants can feel, and don’t consent to being eaten. (Gets a bit funny when it comes to stuff where it’s not actually alive though, just a vector to spread seeds)

23·4 days agoDid the food consent to being harvested?
No, because no food can, other than arguably humans, but that’s usually illegal.

51·5 days agoAmericentrism.
That’s just the standard in most of EU, two party consent.
Though it’s a weird thing where in some of EU, legally, not hanging up when it states “calls may be recorded” counts as consent

memes@lemmy.world•Are we just making up language rules as we go?
4·5 days agoLiterally yes, we are.
Cause language is a toolkit to communicate ideas, and a toolkit frozen in glass is a useless toolkit.
You need to swap out that hammer when it starts getting damaged, or put back a screwdriver when you find out you need it again, or add new tools when you find that the tools you have now aren’t fit to purpose.
And sure, there’s some loose screws at the bottom of the bag, but they don’t harm anything, and very occasionally they come in useful.
