However, I suspect that while the media will cover climate issues for clicks (which they have to do to survive), they’ll ultimately continue furthering their own interests as a class by publishing content that delays action.

Most media is owned and staffed by people who will have to give things up if we’re actually going to tackle climate change.

So fuck 'em, unfortunately. Like this summer shows; we don’t have time to wait for them to get on board, and we can’t count on them to help.

I’m absolutely appalled by the government and media’s response to what is happening right now.

It’s time for other institutions to confront the government and demand action. I want to see the Met Office, Fire Services, NHS and unions make public statements calling for an end to fossil fuel use and extraction.

It’s getting stupid and dangerous and we can all see it now.

This is why it’s so important for all of us to be having conversations about climate change. We don’t have to leave it to the media to set the agenda.

I think payment is a really good idea for deterring bots, and making people behave better too. It does leave a paper trail to your real identity though (unless instances are willing to accept cash or crypto), which many people would rather avoid.

A fixed fee is also relative to who pays it. To a company who only care about jacking up their share price it could be nothing, but for a person working in a very exploitative economy it could be several days wages. I would say that it’s the poorest people whose voices are most suppressed, so I wouldn’t want to be part of that problem.

Now, having said that, if there was a mechanism for distributing back the surplus from signups after running costs to good users of the instance I would be in favour of it. Per-user instance costs are very low on medium and large instances, so most users would get most of their money back, and perhaps even make money. Making it a cooperative would mean low costs for genuine users and incentivise participation in making it a good instance. If OP wants to do something like that let me know - I’d love to get involved!

I think in a lot of cases people have not much choice but to continue working in their job. In order to not go insane in that situation, a lot of those people willingly maintain the self-deception that they do actually want to be there and it is good. It allows them the make the best of the situation and to bond with colleagues etc.

When someone openly undermines that shared illusion there is actually quite a lot at stake emotionally for those people, and they don’t like it.

I agree. And I think people will be less likely to do it non-consensually if they they know that the other person knows it’s illegal.
