In terms of more “classic” nonfiction materials, j don’t think it’s a very important skill. Something like Anne Frank’s diary or Night can definitely be powerful, but I don’t think reading a secondary source on the American civil war has any more value for a student than a chapter in a textbook.

There isn’t much of an alternative. All major manufacturers have been doing this for a while, we are approaching the point where you’ll need to buy and maintain a classic car to avoid this type of data collection. I work in somewhat high-level banking, and while I admit that I assumed a government institution would be better about this than private companies, this sounds very par for the industry.
