  • good actions for wrong reasons are… still good actions. you want to hire black actors to pander to minorities? sure, it’ll still help a little child imagine themselves as the hero, and help the actor show their skill. you want to hire a sensitivity consultant because it’ll look good in the credits? please do, at best they’ll really help, at worst they’ll get a free paycheque.

and if a race swapped character acts the same way as they did before? well alright, as long as it’s not completely nonsensical. obviously there are social and cultural differences but the world is vast, plenty of personalities out there.

we become what we do. this inclusiveness might be caused by pandering today, but because it’s being done at all, tomorrow it’ll be the norm

not the best way forward, but better than not moving at all

  • the problem with reddit is that it used to be amazing, and is still the best place to ask questions (though with the number of bots this is slowly becoming less and less true).

i still vividly remember the time when i spent 2 weeks messaging microsoft support that insisted that i need to replace the device i just bought, even though i repeatedly told them the device works fine with a different machine so something must be wrong with my PC. so i got frustrated and asked the same question on reddit, within a few hours someone diagnosed exactly what was wrong, and gave me tips on how to fix it (or well, in that case i needed to walk around the issue rather than fix it)

and even now whenever i look up tech issues the first results that actually have thought behind the words (instead of sponsorships for whatever driver updating software company bought the article) it’s usually on reddit

it’s such a shame it’s been aggressively going down hill, it could’ve truly stayed the front page of the internet for decades. all it had to do was not get worse for the user

i don’t think it’s inconsequential, information is powerful, second only to unity. and to tackle unity you need to disrupt the flow of information, if people don’t know that many others share the same beliefs as them, then it’s much easier to fall into despair

and yeah so far no hero has emerged from the masses to unify people and properly stand against the terror, but as long as the information flows it is always a possibility, a constant threat to their agenda

or so i tell myself to keep my hopes up

  • none of the “smart” devices are actually smart. in my experience they’re really fucking dumb

i once bought a “smart” electric kettle because i thought it’d be nice to boil my water to exact temperatures for my teas. it had a little button on a little screen to turn it on

and of course the screen stopped working, and that was the singular thing that broke. if the kettle had a physical switch i’d have only lost the ability to boil to exact temperatures instead of becoming fully useless

a similar thing happened with my Quest VR. a singular smart thing broke (the proximity sensor) and it bricked the whole thing (the proximity sensor deteced, well, proximity, and input from that decided if the screen inside was turned on. when it broke, the screen never turned on. the proximity sensor could be disabled - but only from within the settings menu that required the screen to be on in the first place. there was no other way to disable it, and that setting reset every full shut down)

never had that happen with my non smart devices, never had a non-critical feature failing bricked my “dumb” machine. oh the proper graphics card melted in my laptop? whatever i just disabled it, it might not perform as it used to but it’s still functional and perfect for just browsing the internet or watching youtube

my dumb printer never just stopped for no reason, my dumb kettle with a physical toggle has been working perfectly for 3 years now, my dumb light bulbs only stop working when they’ve reached the end of their ability to make light, my dumb devices never refuse to work even when what they can do isn’t perfect anymore

i was already annoyed by so many devices being labelled as “smart” when they’re not, and now they’re also adding “AI” to those things… i hate it here
