Large corporations, especially those related to tech, will generally have a research arm of some form performing university level research. Outside of attempting to use the research to argue that their companies aren’t a harm to society, the research is generally legit.

The corporations generally do it to stay competitive. In the near term, research can be used to create patentable technology and new products. In the long term, the research can give an idea on what can be technically achievable in the future, allowing companies to increase their predictive capabilities.

Even during the halcyon days of CD sales in the late 90’s, there was a decent amount of filler on a lot of albums. It didn’t help that albums were the product while singles were what were advertised.

As an engineer, a lot of engineers do a lot of dumb stuff.

Part of it is that a lot of engineers don’t think through the implications of their design. Part of it is that a lot of engineers coast by on the equivalent of copying other people’s code. Part of it is that budgets for projects are so compressed that you need a high performer to get it done on budget and getting that high performer in this case isn’t always viable. Part of it is that you need someone smart enough to do the job and dumb enough to not go for a higher pay position in another field.

My guess is that the producers picked Jennifer Lien (Kes) because they were already getting better eye candy already, the writers seemed to be having problems writing for Kes, and it was kind of awkward to have Starfleet officers hitting on a nine year old.

I think there are some natural monopolies where it makes sense to let them be run as monopolies with some form of government control. The energy grid is a good example, you can different suppliers providing electricity but the transmission of it should be within one company/system.

I use it as an example. There are certain actions that people can put to their autonomous reaction. Some of those actions include being able to communicate with others and being able to act in sync with others.

You may be able to perform complex physical actions by yourself, but you have issues processing outside human stimulus at a fast enough speed to play rock paper scissors at the same place that others do.

I mention walking as a base level, but I can extend it beyond that.

As a weird example, I’m going to mention swing dancing. It is supposed to be random acts of dancing by those who are dancing with each other. Doing so requires the following:

• Identifying the tempo of the song
• Moving your feet to the tempo
• Giving or receiving direction through tactical contact only.
• Positioning your body based on the tempo of the music, your footwork, and the direction either given or received.

And a lot of dancing and other movement based communication is at a level where you don’t have to think about the individual movements even if the movements aren’t planned out. You seem to have to consciously think about these movements while others around you don’t have to.

My brain doesn’t need to think through each step; it is automatic.

Think of all the steps needed to walk, including monitoring tilt. You don’t need to think about walking, you just walk automatically.

Technology is a tool. Treat it as one.

It depends on how far you’ve gone. Most Star Trek shows of the era took a while to get up to speed.

Voyager has a cadence similar to TNG except that the various species that Voyager interacts with changes over time. After the Kazon, the new species are better designed and fleshed out.

Seven of Nine is a far better designed character than Kes and the writing for her was so much better. It also seems like the show was able to identify the characters that could carry an episode.
