It is estimated that Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has cost Russia up to $211 billion in equipping, deploying, and maintaining its troops in Ukraine, a senior U.S. defense official told Reuters on Feb. 16.

Russia made billions off of gas sales to Europe. They could have easily turned their country into an economic powerhouse with a real manufacturing sector and real innovation. There was engineering and IT talent in the country that could have carried that transition.

Instead they chose this. Even if they “win” the few provinces they claim to annex, they lost the extremely profitable gas and trades to Europe, they lost the bit of trust left in the West, and they lost millions of people.

The mind boggling thing is this:

If by some miracle they conquered the whole of Ukraine tomorrow, they’d still have an insurgency to deal with.

They’ve stoked the flames of Ukrainian nationalism. Once you’ve killed enough babies, there’s an almost unending supply of people who don’t care about victory, all they want is revenge. These are people who look like them, often speak the same language, and often also hold Russian passports.

It’s already a huge issue in the territory they do hold and in Russia itself. Terrorism and insurgency will be a problem for them for a hundred years.

The territory they’ve gained will never make them money. It’ll be like Northern Ireland x10.

      Incredibly stupid.

Yeah, well, they already lost even if they manage to overpower Ukraine. With all the sanctions on high tech, spending absurd money on military and it’s equipment, loosing working population big time etc. there is no way that they will avoid backtracking to middle ages level.

The people they lost have have been young men and prisoners, mostly - people they don’t actually want, and are happy to find a way to remove.

And the dream of actually participating in world society is nice, but it would require them to stop the rampant corruption in their society. Which is unlikely, since all the way up the chain is a kleptocracy.
