I recently had the opportunity to play the video game The Finals on a very good computer with a 2070 or something along the line (and it was a bit laggy on medium 1080p)

I’ve always wanted to play this game when I saw the promotion material. On top of being interesting and good looking, it’s actually really really fun.

However, after finishing my second quickplay, I got hit really hard by the fact that I would never be able to play such a game on decent quality 60fps. I guess it’s not really about The Finals… But since good gpus aren’t on the way to become affordable and I hear about some shortages of materials, I guess I have to say byebye to this.

PS: I could put Helldivers 2 here maybe also but I’m not sure

Something seems odd about that, the 2070 should be capable of playing the game maxed @ 1080p

Sorry, can’t tell, it was in some sort of gaming room so I don’t have access to the computer in question but I assume it might be this since the game goes all over the place with the destructions

Possibly, but more likely the computer was just in need of some cleaning.

My friend plays Helldivers 2 on his laptop with integrated graphics on medium and hits 30fps. Any CPU from the last 8 years should be enough.

For the finals, yeah maybe you need something more powerful than that, but not by much. A 2070 is a fantastic GPU, it would be pretty weird to have a GPU from 2018 but a CPU from way earlier.

Might be worth cleaning the computer if you haven’t in the last few months. If you’re unfamiliar with the process check out some YouTube videos on it, this is as mandatory as changing the oil in a car regularly.

There’s tools like cpuid that can indicate if throttling is occurring.

If you want to rant about GPU prices, why randomly call out one/two specific games? Not like it doesn’t apply to any other modern release. I don’t get this post

Also I looked up some benchmarks and you can get 60FPS on medium with an RX 6600 (about 200 USD curently in the US) in both finals & helldivers. Could possibly get away with a cheaper card on Low settings

It’s a rant, kinda like a “offmychest” post if you want. And I’m “calling out” these games because they where really fun imo, and I am a bit sad knowing there is a very low chance I’ll get to experience them at peak player count.

I have heard similar complaints about performance from my friends, and I have solved most of them by simply suggesting they check their fans. Not just case fans, but the GPU/CPU, too. Check that they’re actually spinning and getting adequate airflow. Unplug and then vacuum them. You’d be surprised how much of a difference that can make.

If you want a game that runs poorly then check out Squad

Something definitely seems off about the 2070 if it is struggling at 1080p so don’t give up yet. You might still get to play if you diagnose what’s wrong.

Go play Xonotic for awhile and you can bathe in buttery smoothness no matter the computer you are playing on. The computer could be your shoe in fact or the back of your hand, it will run at 60fps either way.

Yes you could feel sad it doesn’t have a larger player base and isn’t the new competitive shooter everyone is obsessed with but it is also true that Xonotic is like pure unfiltered reaction and adrenaline compared to almost any other shooter especially modern ones. If you want to feel that smoothness of motion Xonotic can give it to you in spades in the way only a quake derivative multiplayer fps can.
