Here is his instrumental track The Edge, the one Dre sampled. You’ll probably recognize what he sampled almost immediately even if you’re only barely aware of his work (like me).
I love how often a sample leads me to listen to something I never would have otherwise. There was a torrent floating around that had all the songs Beastie Boys sampled for Paul’s Boutique, it was fantastic.
Holy shit, thank you! You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to know where the main sample from Brass Monkey came from.
Check out WhoSampled. It’s the largest resource regarding samples/covers.
Thanks! That’s a great resource! I enjoy secondhandsongs.com to see who has done cover versions. Sometimes I find out a song I really like isn’t even original to the artist I thought it was!
They liked diggin’ down deep in the record bin!
Thanks, Duck!
Ilya Kuryakin!
Kicking it old school ;)
Honestly they’re excellent. I ran across A Taste of Honey while listening to the Apple Music Cocktail Party playlist.
Oh that’s a smooth track! Cheers
I’d like the story on how Dre got to hear that bit.
Digging thru the crates at the thrift stores and flea markets relentlessly
Ladadada, it’s the mothafuckin D R E!
That’s awesome, I had no idea he was behind that tune. I hope he got paaaaiiiid!
Lol you’d already have to be paid to release that many albums of just instrumentals. This was before mixtapes and would’ve actually cost a pretty penny to make back then.
Also wasn’t there a big thing about artists like this not getting paid for their samples being used? I remember a story of the guy who made the drum beat sampled in dozens of really popular songs that never saw a dime.
Ah yeah, the Amen Break from Amen, Brother by the Winstons. There was actually a fundraiser for the guy a few years back, I threw in a few pounds, as his work has been the basis of a huge part of my musical taste!
Spot on. Couldn’t remember the names but this is exactly the one I was remembering.
Ok. Thats pretty cool!
Also Ducky wasn’t a cannibal. Which can’t be said for the Other Ilya…
Awesome track, much appreciated!
Holy shit this is an insane bit of trivia for work tomorrow, thanks Squid
That’s the ncis doctor… Didn’t know he composed, definitely wouldn’t have associated him with West Coast rappers.
And in “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” and in the “The Great Escape”
That’s a good composition but an even better recording.
