It’s similar to “it’s costs nothing to be nice” but framed in an unusual way so you end up thinking about it more thoroughly

It is framed as an obligation to be respectful even if you are angry at them. Which is a reasonable mindset for your friends, but not fascists as the latter doesn’t deserve respect.

I view it as a kindness that any human deserves. Having differences in opinion doesn’t change that for me.

I think that even horrible people deserve to be treated humanly, as in no torture, but not with kindness.

What does the word kindness mean to you?

I suppose it’s trying to approach any interaction with good intentions for every party, and to treat people humanly. But not necessarily nice or helpful

More precisely, you end up feeling more like a victim of the negative emotions that tempt you

I think you are looking for the word duty or responsibility. Not a native speaker but there is a word for something that you have to to when gaining rights.

What do you mean by “right”?

A “right” is guaranteed to us by our government*. People can be shitty to other people because they are also shitty people. Sometimes, there are consequences. Sometimes there are not. But, the government has a mandate they are not allowed to ignore. People can ignore that mandate if they feel they won’t face any repercussions.

Do you want to say “duty”?

People have a moral obligation to be respectful to others. No judge or prosecutor or policeman is going to enforce that upon another citizen.**

    *It’s taken, not given.

    **Edge cases exist

    YMMV

Technically you’re correct. I’d add that other than the individual’s moral obligation there’s also the culture and acceptable norms, and here, as you’re probability about to find out, the government as a lot of influence.

Give basic respect to everyone, and more if they earn it. People don’t deserve your trust off the bat, and they can lose your respect.

A “Showerthought” is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you’re doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

  • Both “200” and “160” are 2 minutes in microwave math
  • When you’re a kid, you don’t realize you’re also watching your mom and dad grow up.
  • More dreams have been destroyed by alarm clocks than anything else

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as “capitalism” and “communism”. If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy’s Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
