  • This makes me wonder… are these Americans even trying to live their self-proclaimed leftist values?

This just feels like a post that’s meant to brow-beat the left more than ask a question that’s in anyway answerable.

Like… are any of these people at least trying to fight fascism, or are they mostly just sitting scared at their computers?

Your framing is an assumption and immediately dives into what people should do (as if they’re not already).

I am not saying everyone needs to take up arms as an immediate first step to fight fascism, but there are SO many other things than can be done in your local community as a start. From planning mutual aid fundraisers, to volunteering with grassroots orgs, to forming neighborhood ICE watches to document kidnappings, to showing up to your municipal government meetings to try to stop the rise of state surveillance… Hell, even planning potlucks to share food and get to know like-minded people can be incredibly effective at offering opportunities for education and skill sharing.

Yes, people in my community are doing everything you describe here and more. People I know have been fighting for years and have suffered for it. I can’t speak for other communities, but I’m sure they are on the same page.

  • The tests also showed how broadly the camera’s plate detector could interpret what it saw. In some cases, it mistook bumper stickers, dealership frames, and other graphics for license plates and cropped them out as if they were plates. In one video of a passing motorcycle, the detector cropped an American flag patch on the rider’s saddlebag as if it were a plate.

This stood out to me. Call me cynical, but I don’t think this is a mistake. I think they’re calling all of these “misidentified” license plates a “license plate” to simply establish plausible deniability for collecting this data. It would be pretty trivial for their backend system to interpret the images server side and build an identification profile for each vehicle. This way, even if you remove your plate, your vehicle can be identified.

I wonder how quickly they could build a profile on every vehicle in the US simply by having cameras up in every major city? When we defeat flock/axon, what’s stopping the next surveillance company from buying that data and using it?

  • On some technical level you may be correct, but their site claims that /e/os is degoogled.

    https://e.foundation/e-os/

/e/OS is a “deGoogled” version of Android OS. It has an open-source Android OS core, with no Google apps or Google services accessing your personal data.

    • Google default search engine has been removed from the OS everywhere and replaced with our new ethical search engine: Murena Find
    • Google Services have been replaced by microG
    • Connectivity checks do not use Google servers
    • We do not use Google’s Network Time Protocol servers
    • We do not use Google’s Domain Name System servers
    • Geolocation uses BeaconDB Location Services in addition to GPS

So I would love to know more about what you’re talking about.

  • A bunch of weird woman-hating incels co-opted the “redpill” language. I first saw it on /r/redpilll but I’m not sure that’s the origin. It honestly probably emerged from gamergate. Essentially, they rejected the notion that being a “nice guy” gets you anywhere in life. They promoted shit like “negging” instead, which was the idea that women will find you more interesting if you insult them. There was more heinous stuff than that, but you get the idea.
