Fediverse@lemmy.world•How to get non technical friends in the fediverse?English
12·6 days agoHonestly, the lack of a decent algorithm is why I stopped using Mastodon. It’s not a problem on lemmy since up- and downvotes are the algorithm, but for all other fediverse services it’s what keeps me away.
The difference is that this doesn’t mean I’m on Insta or Twitter, just that this here is basically all social-media I do.
With a passion

The amount of dinosaurs in oil is less then negligeble at best. Oil is the result of huge mats of dead plankton getting trapped below the seafloor and then pressure-cooked into crude oil. We’re talking millions of tons of dead plants and animals accumulating as sediment in (geologically) short timeframes, more than would have ever been possible to produce with the biomass of dinosaurs.
Holy shit… I told myself I’d go to Curiosity Stream once they accepted different payment methods than credit cards but DAMN SON! That price…
Edit: Oh wait… that’s annually… okay, I’m still with it.
Edit2: And I got them mixed up with Nebula, that’s where I really wanted to go… damn.

Technology@lemmy.world•Linux just cracked 10% desktop usage in North America, but no one's sure whyEnglish
133·11 days ago10.61% in June 2026, up from 3.56% in May
Tripling in ONE MONTH.
Yeah, I’m sorry everyone. As much as all of us love Linux and (rightfully) hate Microslop, that’s a jump that simply cannot be explained just by human users.
Data from Cloudflare Radar appears to support that explanation. Cloudflare reportedly recorded a similar rise in Linux traffic, but the spike largely disappeared when its data was filtered to include only traffic identified as human. The comparison is not a direct match for StatCounter’s methodology, but it provides a strong indication that bots and automated systems are responsible for much of the sudden increase.
I hope he doesn’t think he’ll get an answer to his question.
You simply cannot tell me that your diet is healthy when the aroma of your gastrointestinal tract is “death”
Paris is the crime capital of Europe.
The city with the highest crime index in Western Europe is Marseilles (67,03) second highest is Bimingham (63,96)
Those would be the 8th and 13th place in the US. So you’d have to go through:
- Memphis (77,85)
- Detroit (72,82)
- Baltimore (71,11)
- Albuquerque (70,90)
- Saint Louis (70,12)
- Oakland (68,60) and
- New Orleans (67,92)
Before you arrive at Marseilles. Paris is at 57,88, that would be the 17th place in the US.
(Source: Numbeo)
At the same time the kind of crimes that are unusually high in Marseilles and Paris are pickpocketing and petty theft.
The crimes that are unusually high in the US are violent crimes.
The US doesn’t only have stabbings too, it has more per capita than the UK.

In addition to the gun murder disparity

In this context I really hope you mean aides.

Gaming@lemmy.zip•The massive Project Zomboid Build 42 is out nowEnglish
16·18 days agoImho. Project Zomboid is THE ultimate zombie-game. The atmosphere is perfect.
You’re being introduced to the game with “There was no hope of survival. This is how you died.” Because you likely ARE going to die.
You become overconfident and then get bit by a group of four undead who suddenly come at you from behind in a bathroom. Or you get trapped in a skyscraper by a horde that came running when the house-alarm went off. Or you die because the piece of shit car you are driving just won’t start anymore stranding you, exhausted and wounded, in front of the ever advancing horde. Or you fall from a roof. Or you cut yourself when jumping through a window. Or you just looted a watch and it had an alarm set that goes off right when you try to sneak by some zombies.
A single Zombie is seldom a threat (though it still can be) but their numbers are just too damn high and they never stop following you, while you become hungry, tired and exhausted. Then the water stops working and the power goes out and suddenly you have to survive by scavanging until you are able to set up a safe base where you can collect rainwater and start agriculture… or maybe you become a nomad, always one step ahead of the Zeds and scrounging for the little food left from before the apocalypse that hasn’t rotted away yet…
It is the perfect “The Walking Dead”-experience in single- as well as multiplayer.
Project Zomboid is one of my favorite games and it is the zombie-survival-game that all the other games in that genre are measured against.

politics @lemmy.world•Mayor Mamdani Unveils 30% Discount at New Municipal Grocery Stores
1·18 days agoYes, that’s my guess too, rent in NYC has to be a huge part of any supermarket budget. But this is still a subsidiary as loss of income is budgetary the same as an expense.

politics @lemmy.world•Mayor Mamdani Unveils 30% Discount at New Municipal Grocery Stores
10·19 days agoPeople are giving you uninformed answers, but to be fair, you just could have searched it yourself.
The stores haven’t even opened yet. The first are expected to open by the end of 2027.
The plan says they get the real estate from the city for free or very cheap. Also subsidies for groceries in the “core basket”.
The City, through NYCEDC, will provide the foundation and deliver grocery-ready sites, cover rent and property taxes, fund initial buildout, and establish a single public brand for all N.Y.C. Groceries locations. The City will also set clear requirements for affordability, job quality, transparency, and performance.
To support this effort, the City has committed $70 million in capital funding for store construction and fit-out.
So the answer is city subsidies, payed for with tax dollars.
Where those dollars will be coming from within the city budget has not yet been announced, but seeing as they have time until end of 2027, there’s likely going to be a lot of budget-shuffling and negotiations until a budget-position is going to be revealed.
Might be in the NYC budget already, but I don’t see reporting on it, nor do I have the time to go over that.
In my opinion it’s a relatively good and easy way of redistributing money from top to bottom. You know, like schools, libraries, public pools (or free universities in better countries). Because it directly addresses a need of the poorest New Yorkers without just handing them money and implements a “food as a human right” response to corpos profiting off of societies need for groceries.

121·19 days agoI have been blocking .ml for a couple of days now after having been argued with in bad faith, having words put into my mouth and basically having been declared one of “Hitlers Helpers” for just talking about my lived experience with the GDR and being a social democrat instead of a communist.
Lemmy in its entirety has become so much more pleasant and the amount of posts and comments that go “voting makes no sense at all” that I see has plummeted to basically nothing. It’s very refreshing.
