  • As I said good for you, if you found your solution.

So where did I recommend it to others. I just said why I chose it.

I am fine with waiting for the security patches and the comparison to Win10 does not work, as this version does not get any security patches at all anymore.

I will keep sitting in my cardboard fortress and will wait until someone finds me.

  • I think you might not understand the meanings of privacy and security.

These are two different things, you can have privacy without security and the other way around. Having both is the best case.

As @ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net said, some people care more about all those app trackers rather than have a full secure phone.

If there would be the one solution 100% privacy and security and available for most phones I would instantly use it. But it is not available yet.

If you are happy with Graphene OS good for you, but keep in mind it might not be what everyone is looking for.

  • Sorry but this sounds again like the typical e/Os bashing from GrapheneOS users.

Those two system are not the same. One is focused on security and the other on privacy.

Yes I know about the issues of e/OS, but it is still better than using Google or Apple.

For me personally I moved cause I don’t want to support american companies. So Graphene was no option, as I would need to give google some money or buy one 2nd hand. But Pixels are still quite expensive compared with others.

Why do you always need to attack other systems, they can coexist. We should be happy people have more options to break free from Big Tech companies.

  • My girlfriends family is from Iran, they hate the regime there. But surely they are not celebrating. They are scared not hearing from their families since days, who still are in Iran.

Just remember this war is not about regime change. Maybe have a look at Venezuela how that worked out…

This action clearly violates again international law, and because they claim Iran was 5 minutes away from having a nuclear bomb. Since they so successful destroyed everything in their last raid.

Don’t cry if China attacks Taiwan and claims Taiwan was just 21min away from nuclear bomb…

  • I really like it. Was impressed how good it works, as I only have a Community version, not an official build. Especially that they show you how many trackers the apps have, never thought there would be so many.

Never had any major issues since using it nearly a year.

Only thing I do not like so much is their App Lounge, as updates there come a bit later, so mostly I use Aurora Store instead.

Depends where you from, for me all banking apps work. Here is a list of working banking apps: https://community.e.foundation/t/list-banking-apps-on-e-os/33091

What is not working is in App purchases, as I do not use a Google Account.

Hope this helps a bit, if you have more questions you send me a message.

  • I managed to delete most of it through the course of last year.

Windows --> Linux Mint Office --> LibreOffice WhatsApp --> Signal Android --> e/Os Gmail --> Posteo & Tutamail Reddit --> Lemmy Maps --> Comaps & Here Microsoft Authenticator --> Aegis Shazam --> Audile

In general I found lots of Open source Apps on F- Droid

I permanently deleted Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Netflix. I looked into alternatives but nothing really good. To be honest I do not miss them, as mainly all are just bloated with Ads.

Spotify is still on the list, but as I have 5 other people in my account I could not yet switch from it.

  • Thanks for sharing, really insightful.

In my personal opinion after being also responsible in AI for our company, I do not see how it will be profitable for them.

For example Microsoft Copilot license, costs 30$/month, but a lot of things I can do with it a free Chatbot can do too.

It definitely has it strengths and use cases and I am sure it will not go away. But it is not the way the market it as a full AI, it just generates answers with the highest probability. I cannot see it developing from there to the real AI.

I think this year will be really interesting to watch all the AI companies, especially Oracle as they have to refinance a lot. If one falls it will send them into to a spiral, the big companies will be fine, but I am sure they will cut their funding of OpenAI.

But who knows could be the other way around and OpenAI finds anything new to make them more profitable.

  • Perfect is the enemy of the good.

Just see it as a first step. Signal is still better than WhatsApp being owned by Meta. If we get more people of WhatsApp, in the future there might be more European alternatives.

There are no big European alternatives the majority of people are willing to switch.

I got rid of WhatsApp last year myself and could only convince 8 people to use Signal. I tried Threema and Matrix, but most normal people are not willing to do this and don’t care they give up their data and so on…

  • Sorry but you seem to be mixing up privacy and security a couple of times. Those are 2 different things.

As you suggested I tried to search about those security issues, but i could not find anything regarding indepent security audits. I would be interested in it, if you have the links.

This article from Golem is from 2020, so not sure if this is still up to date today. I could find something regarding the browser being an issue and the source from the app lounge.

Where are you forced to use the Murena Cloud? I did not have to make an account of anything. I created a folder for all their preinstalled apps and put them there, as they don’t look great. I heard there was an issue with TTS going to OpenAI, maybe you mean that.

To me after reading into degoogling the last couple of months, there seems to be an exchange of accusations going on between Graphene and e/OS. It might be because both support Google Pixel and they fear about market share.

In my opinion there is enough for both of them and this toxic behaviour is not helping anybody, just the two big ones Android and iOS. I really don’t like the toxic sound mainly coming from the Graphene community, that their solution is the only true one. Which to me seems a bit odd, when they still relying on Google. I am interested to see who their 2nd Hardware supplier will be in the future.

As I see it you can simply summarize it this way: You want privacy without relying on Google --> e/OS You want privacy and security but don’t mind using Google --> Graphene OS

For me I am currently using e/OS, as I don’t want to give google any money for a pixel. I might see if the prices drop for a cheap used one to try Graphene.

I am fully aware that e/OS is not as secure as Graphene, but I am no longer relying on Google. But to me this is the compromise I am willing to take.
