Lol have to be careful when I say to someone I use lemmy now to not lead them to a cryptocoin.
And start soon, all the names are almost taken! :D
The damn coins steal all the names and therefore domains. Your username? Probably a cryptocoin name by now
Does Limewire still exist? I’m too afraid to check, probably get a virus from just googling it.

Technology@lemmy.world•Netflix to buy Warner Bros film and streaming businesses for $72bnEnglish
1·10 days agoCurious to see whether they combine HBO and Netflix. In the article netflix answers in an ambiguous way.
I bet they are trying to calculate whether this will bring in less money if they combine them, because they can’t just jack up the price of netflix subscription to double immediately after the merging of the two platforms. Many have both Netflix and HBO subscription so it might actually reduce the revenue.

17·15 days agoI hope someone else can pitch in with a more indepth instructions, but two things I wanted to mention:
First, forget about hosting your own email from home. Seriously. Even those who do it professionally don’t want to deal with that at home. You’ll find people on fediverse who do it but I’m sure plenty will give you this same recommendation/warning. It’s a huge hassle and it’s so easy to get your domain blocked/ending up on a blacklist and way harder to get out of it.
Second, I can personally recommend https://linuxupskillchallenge.org/ if you are really starting from scratch ( there’s a community here: !linuxupskillchallenge@programming.dev ). This is how I started and set up my own linux server and started self hosting stuff on it. It’s really basic and won’t teach you everything you need but it’s a great start for setting up your own server. You can do everything with a local server at home that you have set up.

Europe@feddit.org•Digital Omnibus: How Big Tech Lobbying Is Gutting the GDPREnglish
4·17 days agoCan’t believe they are playing that game. You’d think in the commission, where many are long-time politicians and most of them studied political science I assume, would know a bit of history and how playing these games never leads to anything but the opponent wanting more and more.
I sure hope they are not just thinking they can sit this one out and compromise until Trump retires/dies. Maybe the next one is even worse.

22·17 days agoSpineless cowards. WTF is wrong with people in the commission?! WTF is wrong with their advisors?! Are they treating this job like a temporary internship where you just make connections and get a nice fucking line on your CV without causing too much noise? Just keep others happy and naively believe anything some conman in a fancy 2000e suit says on a fancy dinner they paid?
With how federation works it does really help investigating vote manipulation cases.
There is a user who is super active on a community and was consistently getting downvoted with 10-15 downvotes, making sure certain post filters would never show this content on all feed. All the downvoters were the same on every post, they were from a new instance that has/had no web frontend and none had comment history.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are yall okay with this sub turning into some AI led corporate icebreaker?
171·1 month agoIf they haven’t been tagged as bots please report them. The ability to mark an account as a bot + the ability to hide all bot accounts is there for a reason and whoever is creating all of these accounts is not playing a fair game.
Mods + admins are keeping an eye on reports and there’s tons of accounts being banned every day across threadiverse. Some trolls give up after a while (new ones always pop up, but that’s just the internet).

4·1 month agoVinegar based cleaner for everything and you are good. Recommend a separate, dedicated mirror cleaner for mirrors though. Clean weekly to reduce the need to scrub with more powerful stuff.

Europe@feddit.org•What are some of the best Christmas markets worth visiting in the EU? [AskEurope]English
2·1 month agoWinpunch already listed some, but my favourites are at Karlsplatz and Altes AKH inner yard and highly recommend those. There are quite a lot of christmas markets and I don’t know all of them.
A tip: bring cash and go during the day. The markets get quite packed in the evening.
