Yeah I’m not buying it.
- in academia, there are a lot more mid- and low-tier academics (like me!) than there are high-tier academics, and there are plenty of lower-tier venues and lower-tier institutes. In these tiers, you’re not expected to publish at the highest levels.
- in higher-tier academia, once you get tenure (to be precise: once you submit your tenure package) the urgent need for high-impact journal cites is greatly reduced. you write books or something I dunno.
- industry scientists have far fewer publishing requirements. or they write articles for trade mags. One place I interviewed was actively hostile to publishing.
- government-lab scientists, I dunno, I think they write technical articles that they give their sponsors?
The dynamic that u/mIRNAexpert describes does exist, but it’s not the whole problem. And like any scientist will tell ya, figuring out the problem is half way to figuring out the solution.

When I was a kid I took a two-page IQ test in a Reader’s Digest and I got 125. It meant a lot to me.

But if people really are just giving up, we need to recognize it.
I think a lot of people are unhappy but don’t know what to do. Just going to a general protest doesn’t seem like enough. And there’s no obvious leader to the opposition.
This is the stage of the conflict where we try to minimize the damage until the next election. That’s not a very motivating message, but that’s where we are. I suggest you pick an organization and do what you can with them. There are others, but personally I picked Indivisible:

Consider:
On the default web client, you should see thumbnails for the youtube videos on the first two links, but not on the third. There are various reasons for this, here’s an earlier investigation.
On some phone apps I think all 3 of those links resolve to your instance. Clients/apps handle things differently, and some even fetch their own thumbnails!
Finally, everything is evolving: instance servers are reconfigured, versions are updated, clients change, hosting servers change the way they do things, youtube changes things on its end, etc. So it’s a bit of a moving target.
Mods might be able to look the other way if lemmy is promoted, but not if obvious brigading happens.

3·7 days agoThanks, it’s amazing how I can log in to lemmy every day and there are still live interesting communities that I didn’t know existed. We’re really not that small after all.
Yeah I kinda remember the slrpk.net process also included a manual review. If that’s the case for lemmy.world maybe the admins could just update their account creation text to explain that.
The “registration application denied” text sounds kinda final too.
