  • Medicare-for-all would probably be a good thing for the US healthcare system, but it might be too late to save it from collapse

Hospitals are going bankrupt at an incredible rate during a time when medical debt is the #1 cause of personal bankruptcy in the US

Providers are being asked to treat more patients per shift, giving them less time for each patient, yet costs have reached record highs and still climbing for the patient

We have the least efficient healthcare system in human history, it’s not even close. Combine that with the fact a small number of people take up a disproportionate amount of resources, and we get to part of why healthcare is unaffordable for most Americans

My local hospital has a frequent flyer who calls 911 for an ambulance to the hospital every day, then gets an ambulance home at the end of the day (because he wouldn’t leave otherwise). He has had well over 1,000 ambulance rides

He has never once had an issue that needed anbulance treatment. All medical complaints turned out to be a false alarm

He’s probably cost the hospital, a non-profit, over 1 million dollars. He may have caused the death(s) or serious injury of others because he’s frequently tying up the last available ambulance

Now contrast that with one of the paramedics that take him to the hospital - that medic got a serious head injury last year. Someone who witnessed it called him an ambulance. The medic ran away because he could not afford an ambulance ride

We live in a society where healthcare providers cannot afford healthcare

All this to say American healthcare is so inefficient, I don’t think it will be sustainable unless we get rid of private insurance or at a minimum deeply reform it

  • That’s overly reductive.

In general the US government is good at the things it wants to be good at, and bad at the things is doesn’t

Death penalties are a good example of one where it doesn’t want to be good at it. A huge portion of the population does not want death penalties, and obstruct the process where they can - a good thing, generally for anyone against the death penalty

A result of that is an inability to find competent executioners and often inability to find drugs for lethal injections

An example of something the government does well: Aviation infrastructure. The US has far and away the best aviation infrastructure in the world, with an incredible safety record. Best part is all the infrastructure is socialized. Anyone who wants to use it can, for free. Got a cheap drone you want to fly through controlled airspace? You can access ATC services for free to do it
