That’s why beefing up public schools is something that should have priority.

Maybe humanity should learn from this and start the Butlerian Jihad before AI gets too powerful?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is an old movie that couldn't be made today?
2·16 hours agoNope. See also: Romeo and Juliet from 1968. While it is probably the best adaption of the story ever, underage actors and nudity is somehow frowned on today.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is an old movie that couldn't be made today?
13·16 hours agoLook up all the stunts Buster Keaton did, and shiver. Or The Little Rascals or Hal Roach’s Rascals, whatever they were called.
Or the 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet - while probably one of the best versions ever, nobody today would dare to think doing a movie like that today - it would be criminal.
The absolute back-breaker of the US educational system. They keep kids out of school to indoctrinate them by completly incompetent people instead of giving them a proper, universal education and the ability to come in regular contact with kids of their age outside the normal circles.
That does not mean that the US school system is the ultimate solution, on the contrary. But it would be much more important to fix that than to allow any yokel to brainwash their kids at home into a next generation undereducated and narrowminded person.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL mondegreen is the mishearing of the words in a song.English
2·1 day agoJust like the “Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme” in Scarborough Fair. There are older versions where this verse ends in “…married in time” (I don’t remember the rest). Someone propagated this song when music was primarily an oral tradition, and the erroneous version spread more than the correct one.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a scientific fact that sounds made up but is 100% real?
2·1 day agoAnd you can see sooo much of the infrared and ultraviolet part of the spectrum. What you see is still a kind of pinkish-violet.
By the way, no LED based light is “full spectrum”. That is a common lie. Growth lights have violet-blue LEDs in the 200-400nm range, and red ones in the 600-800nm range.
If you do a spectrum analysis of any LED light, you will see distinctive, narrow peaks around the LEDs core frequencies, usually with a bandwidth of 12-40nm.
For absortion ranges of Chlorophyll A and B, see for example https://www.mpsd.mpg.de/17628/2015-04-chlorophyll-rubio
