Great in German, no idea if the English is as great. There are a lot of puns, as is Walter Moers style, which probably are hard to translate into English. So I can say for the story itself: it’s a wonderful fairy tale atmosphere with a lot of great chemistry between the protagonist, a speaking cat, and the antagonist, a mad alchemist. You do not need to have read any of the other Zamonia novels to understand it, but you will get some small references that are worked into the story.

Castlevania is also a great animation series. Haven’t seen the new series, but the original one without any additional naming parts was great!

Cowboy Bepop is a great anime that doesn’t have a lot of the stereotypical anime stuff.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a great Anime with a nice & long story as well as action scenes.

Gargoyles is a wonderful American cartoon that doesn’t feel like its for kids, similar to ATLA. It tells a continuous story with its characters and has great characters.

While you are right in general, Fullmetal Alchemist isn’t an example of glorifying Nazi Germany. The country is a military dictatorship, they committed a genocide while conquering a neighbouring region and are not portrayed as the good guys. The war and genocide was shown to have long lasting bad effects both on the victims and the perpetrating soldiers. And the leadership is literally working for the big bad.

Just wanted to clarify, as this is one of the few examples where they play the Nazi card straight instead of going: “nice uniform and marching music”.
