One of the tiresome elements of Reddit was always this childrfree tribalism that seemed to span thousands of subs. Have kids, don’t have kids. Entirely your own business and nobody else’s. Neither decision should be worn as some sort of badge of honour.
She was an alcoholic with border-line personality disorder, and as a naive and lonely young Scotsman I foolishly mistook her for a bright girl with a quirky personality who liked a drink and had occasional violent moodswings. Took way too long to realise what the gravity of her condition meant. I was emotionally inexperienced and trusting. And I paid the price.
On the bright side, when i came out of that relationship and healed I met someone well-balanced and kind, who is now my wife. I’m so grateful for the love i now have and the relative stability of my life, and in a weird way I’m glad I went through what I did with my ex, as it makes me appreciate what I now have.

That makes sense. However, as we’re exposed to American media arguably as much as our own—and it’s the same language—my contention is that I can easily hear extremely distinct differences between, say, Birmingham, Glasgow, Newcastle, Liverpool, and Cornwall, so just calling it a “British accent” and attaching connotations of pretension and upper class to it makes no sense in my mind. For example, does the character Daphne in Frasier sound the same to an American as James Bond? Does Harry Potter’s accent sound the same as Tommy Shelby’s? To me absolutely not, but perhaps it is because im more attuned through living here.
Tell me about it - i live in Shetland, which is wildy different from our closest neighbours in Orkney, which to my ears sounds like Welsh!
I take your point, which was why I added the next sentence acknowledging the variety of US accents. I’d argue that the Mid-Atlantic accent that most (but certainly not all) movie stars use is the closest thing to said generic accent.
Theres a guy on insta who dresses in a Union Jack suit and goes to right-wing areas in the UK and proceeds to gently explains to bigots how ridiculous their beliefs are. They think he’s an ally and he talks like them, but slowly drops truth bombs on them. You can see them blue-screening in real-time. It’s wonderful.

Funny thing is, there are thousands of UK accents that are as different from each other as they are from the generic American accent. Granted, there’s variety in the US as well, but the concentration is higher in the UK, as we’ve had towns and villages for thousands of years within 20 miles of each other that had their own unique way of speaking that often only locals can understand without effort.
So yeah, when you say ‘British accent’ that means basically nothing to anyone in the UK.
Probably the wrong place to ask, mate. Take the advice here and you’ll likely be stuck tinkering with a Linux distro while your friends are online having fun. I’m kidding, but even as a non-gamer, it seems a £400–£500 PS5 is a better gaming machine than a new PC at the same price. You just plug it in and play, without worrying about Windows, drivers, graphics settings, or fixing things when they go wrong.
A PC is brilliant if you want to learn coding, make games, or play heavily modded Minecraft, but if the main goal is just to have fun playing games, the PS5 is the better value.
There’s nothing wrong with choosing a PC if that’s what you want, but people on the internet often recommend what they enjoy rather than what’s the best fit for the person asking.
The billionaires have really done a number on you guys. I live in the UK, and this dystopian view of my country being pushed by Musk etc and swallowed by people in the US is absolutely wild. When I was in Malaysia years ago the street cafes would sell you a sort of cold gulash/curry. It was a shock at first, but quite delicious. However, back home in Scotland I am not eating cold curry.
It really has, hasn’t it? Also, people seem a bit shittier than when I joined a few years back. Inevitable, I guess, but despite the low numbers I liked the fact that people mostly behaved liked grown-ups.
I’d actually like to, even though it’s awful. There were still some niche subs I enjoyed, but like many, I got randomly banned from a sub, and my naive assumption that I could just use another old throwaway account, like back in the day, apparently made things worse, and now I’m permabanned.
At first, I played cat-and-mouse with VPNs, private browsing, etc., but they’re weirdly sophisticated once their bots and mods have marked your card, it seems, and each new account would always get banned for ‘ban evasion’.
I used to use VPN location settings and ad blockers, but I’ve got them on quite a few devices and that became a bit of a hit-and-miss ballache. So instead, I subscribed. Of course, they believe I live in India, so I pay about £2 per month. I do not live in India.
I’m happy mate, and I enjoyed the world cup. There are positive people here as well - and this is from a Scotland fan :-)
I enjoyed it, and usually I don’t follow league football closely at home. There are plenty of sports I don’t particularly enjoy watching, but I’ve dialed down my Edgelord ‘What’s going on with the Sports Ball?!’ schtick as I don’t think it was doing me any favors.
I kind of hate it. I’m interested in other people’s opinions and like to learn new perspectives, but some people, especially here, tend to aggressively misinterpret comments and go hard with angry emotional responses. It happened to me recently, and I just responded and blocked the guy outright. You can usually tell from the outset when someone is immediately insulting. I used to push back, but block them before they can get their claws into me.
I think you’re absolutely right, but I think the point still stands that it depends broadly on what stage you’re at in life. I can certainly envisage a time when I’m older (touch wood), where I’d want a different type of vacation from either of the ones I mentioned.
