Technology@lemmy.world•'Windmill': China tests world’s first megawatt-level airship to capture high windsEnglish
6·3 months agoKinetic energy is exactly what’s harvested, which is why modern wind turbines are not far off the theoretical limit of the amount of energy that can be extracted. (Betz’s law)
By taking energy from wind, you slow it down. Slow it down too much, and it can’t get out of the way in time for new air.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Valve seems to have quietly rolled out a major upgrade to their Anti-Cheat system and it’s apparently wrecking havoc on cheat providersEnglish
9·3 months agoI’ve worked in esports for a bit and there’s definitely cheats out there that pros use. When utilised well you won’t even notice when directly spectating or when the player is streaming. They’re designed to help extremely good players just that little bit extra needed to become a top-tier player.
Those “pro-grade” cheats don’t come cheap though. I’ve heard figures in the 400-600/month range multiple times. These would also work on the special tournament clients used by professional players.

Europe@feddit.org•Big Dutch cities call for powers to ban e-scooters, fatbikesEnglish
8·4 months agoThose regulations exist, enforcement is the problem. Fatbikes are the main culprit here. They are sold within legal limits, but it’s incredibly easy to just remove the software limits and/or flash custom firmware.
Police does regular checks, but people tend to quickly turn the limit back on when they see an officer.
That would imply en existence of display/usb outputs…
We’re essentially talking a bunch of embedded devices talking to each other. You can give them all the dns entries you want, but if they (or the programming environment) don’t support DNS lookup you might as well put your dns server in excel.
For that to work industrial devices have to support DNS in the first place…

Technology@lemmy.world•Eyes in the Sky: A Comprehensive Survey of Ukrainian Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)English
1·5 months agoThat was about the lock in part. Most of the mavic footage I’ve seen seems to be digital at least, though I recall something about them changing the RF frequencies constantly to avoid jamming.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•🚨 New York City is holding a public hearing on Mayor Adams's controversial proposal to cap e-bike speed-limits at 15 mph. People can file a written comment until 5 p.m. 📢English
3·5 months agoIt’s the exact same in the Netherlands. The pedal assist is capped at that speed, but nothing stops you from powering though that and going faster. Not that it makes any sense to do so for the average daily office commuter.
When we get resumes, applicants that don’t have some variation of firstname.lastname@… as their email tend to go on the bottom of the pile.

Technology@lemmy.world•The "standard" car charger is usually overkill—but your electrician might not know that [32:26]English
1·6 months agoWhat they do here for (a good amount of) home car chargers is read out the electricity meter using their serial port and dynamically adjust the charge current to never take more than those 3x25A.

3 in the whole country basically means there’s always one at most a 1.5h drive away.
