Student protests in France are an expression of the country’s deep political and economic crisis, says Jan Rovný, a Czech professor at Paris’s Sciences Po.

Rovný explains how these young people protest in solidarity with less fortunate peers, invoking ideals of equality embedded in French minds. He explained how traditionally violent protests in the republic are often met by disproportionately heavy-handed policing.
