Most of my microblogging stuff has been just shouting in the void about stuff I’ve been doing. And random brainfarts. I follow cool people on social media so I can see them shout in the void about what they’re doing. And their random brainfarts.

I’m happy Mastodon still lets me do just that. Perfect platform for that sort of stuff.

The Algo Lords decided people don’t actually want to see that, they want “popular” things and engagement bait. Yeah no, not what I want.

I don’t care how “open source” the printer claims to be. Both hardware and software belong to Belzebub. Such was the dark pact printer makers signed in blood decades ago, and all land shall obey by those words. We shall hit the print button and wallow in torment forever.

Been in a bunch of situations where the best available software is 0.x and hella buggy. (Which I discovered after building the software and its dozen dependencies from source because of course no one had packaged it.) But I’m not mad, I’m just “oh well, the situation will improve in the future, I hope”.

3D printing working, safe-to-handle and durable guns is a pretty complicated technical problem. Don’t need to be a genius to figure out that making 100% plastic guns is asking for trouble. Tiny explosion = big plastic cracky.

Meanwhile, any monkey can bash together pieces of scrap metal and produce a durable gun that way. And that was a thing long, long before 3D printers existed.

Even after I left Reddit during the API fiasco, I did leave around an alt for sex and sexuality discussions. Nuked it some time afterwards when I noted the amount of real people talking had gone down really dramatically. Can’t imagine the situation improving since.

My memory is hazy, but I think the original PC release of FF7 fixed a bunch of translation bungles. I played that version first and was surprised how many errors were found in the PlayStation version.

I can’t remember if they fixed that particular mistake though. Or if the newer PC releases incorporate any of those fixes, haven’t played much of them.

Yeah, I decided back then I would probably not renew my subscription this summer. And I didn’t!

Funny thing, I thought I was more productive in MS Office because the user interface is more polished. But even when LibreOffice is at times janky, I’m actually far more productive in it, it turns out. Sure, my attention is always drawn on the tiny little things that trip me up, but if I look at the sheer amount of text and spreadsheets I can churn out, I’m doing much better on LO.

My use case is “just play music from the same goddamn SD card folder you’ve been using since the early 2010s and have just been copying it over to new cards ever since”, so VLC works quite well for me.

I’m an Xbox fangirl (a resentingly disappointed one, of course), and the recent industry shenanigans made me get apprehensive about whatever is going to come out next from Microsoft’s direction. They could turn the direction around. Not sure if they can.

I liked Nintendo Switch, but Switch 2 was pretty much “yeah, I’ll probably get a Steam Deck at some point, sorry”.

This PlayStation stuff basically switched my opinion of them from “Nnno” to “Oh hell no”.

I will be back to PC gaming! And will be building a new PC once the industry quits being stupid for a moment. Until then, my 2020 laptop will have to do.

My summer reading list (not that I get to read both every year):

• The Songs of Distant Earth, by Arthur C. Clarke
• The Name of the Rose, by Umberto Eco

The first is about what we never prepared for, but could try to thrive through. (Mike Oldfield made a cool concept album about this. One of the songs is called “Only time will tell”)

The second is a murder mystery set in a medieval monastery. But wait! Is it actually a multilayered examination of our notions about information? Oh hell yeah.

I know there’s a lot of people who say “look, I know, capitalism sucks, absolutely, but it’s the only thing that works right now!”

This absolutely shouldn’t stop you from dreaming big, my friend.

Europe is great because of a huge number of fully public or heavily tax subsidised services.

I visit the library often.

Not that I check out many books, but I love the fact that the local main library is a giant big concrete building with air conditioning and nice quiet desks with power strips for laptops. Immense productivity.

The library was closed for renovations last summer and the heat waves really put a huge dent on my work.

I used to play mostly shooters online.

Somehow, living next to a country which is invading one of its neighbours, and seeing a bunch of actual real war footage from real wars on the daily basis, made me reconsider if shooters actually qualify as “fun” these days.
