Hard to say exactly. Seems like there is some sort of system where certain tattoos convey certain powers that are associated with different gangs.

Teenage girl in Singapore (I think) has ability to create fire. Her mother suddenly dies and it turns out is more than what she knew. Ends up joining a gang of women and trying to investigate her mother’s death. I’m only about 25% of the way in, so that’s largely all I can say about it.

When They Burned the Butterfly by Wen-yi Lee. It’s been sitting on my Libby queue for a while and I figured I’d better read it before the hold expires in a couple of months. I’m glad I did, since it’s been very interesting thus far.

I’ve always heard you should name a dog with words containing hard consonants, because they can differentiate them better than vowels and soft consonants. I wonder how that plays into the results of this study (and if what I’ve heard has a scientific basis to back it up).

By the Waters of Babylon may be my favorite short story I’ve read.

Florida(wo)man. Even wealth doesn’t protect you from being absolutely batshit when you live in Florida.

That reminds me of a road in AZ that had signage in KM when I was a kid. I guess it was a part of this program and it never got changed back? It was always a mindfuck suddenly seeing kms instead of miles on road trips through the area.

I’ve probably needed PT for the past couple years. However, last time I went for an acute injury, it cost me $1200 in scans. The result was them saying there was nothing visibly wrong and it would probably clear up on its own in a couple of more weeks (they told me 4-6 weeks post injury and this was on week 3). So I essentially paid all that money for nothing.
I’m in the fortunate position that I can technically afford these kinds of expenses, but I still put off care because of the price. I completely understand why people in a worse position than me would absolutely not go to the doctor.

You still have to have a valid ticket to board the plane. So I’m not sure what the concern would be.

I mean…it wasn’t that long ago that only boys were diagnosed with autism.

My state is 100% mail in ballots.
I ended up working in Product at a tech company. Definitely not a career I’d ever heard about before landing or envisioned myself doing, but it’s been great for supporting my dream life.
I feel pretty fortunate that my lowest point wasn’t that bad in the grand scheme of things.
I was stuck in a dead end job that paid peanuts and was in a somewhat codependent relationship with someone who was not good for me. I also couldn’t afford to move out of my parents basement due to the crappy job.
Ultimately, I realized I had to make drastic changes due to being pretty miserable with my life. I quit my job and went back to uni for a more marketable degree. I worked my ass off to get good internships and ended up at one that turned into a full-time job that I’ve now been at for over a decade. My ex did me the favor of dumping me. I ended up meeting my now spouse at my career job. We bought a house, got a dog, have traveled to numerous countries, and saved enough money that work is becoming increasingly optional.
Overall, I just had to recognize that the status quo was making me miserable and starting to incrementally making changes to my life that would get me closer to where I wanted to be. Past me never could have imagined what was to come for present me, but by just taking one step at a time to improve things, I’ve found incredible happiness.

Veterinarian, marine biologist, or actor depending on what age you asked me. Now, I am none of those things.

Anywhere between 24.5 and 97.7%. Those are crazy numbers!

Italian is essentially a cross between Spanish and French. If you know both, you’re basically 80% of the way to knowing Italian.
Given how much more practical French is, I’d say learn it first, then learn Italian later.

I’ve seen it generally recommended to sequence protein and fiber before anything else in the meal. So yes eating your carbs an hour earlier would in fact be worse for your blood sugar.
I’m not sure how it would be impacted if you ate the carbs an hour later though.

That was my takeaway from the article as well. This is not a clear cut case for either side.

In my experience, American roads are built to support much higher speeds than the speed limit is set. Going 10-20mph over the limit doesn’t feel particularly unsafe on the wide, straight roads.
On the other side, it felt crazy to drive the speed limit on (for example) the narrow, windy roads in Ireland. The limit there felt like a literal maximum, whereas in the US it feels like the minimum.
Keep busy until enough time passes that the pain subsides and you can move on.
