Perhaps nix & NixOS are two sufficiently broad sub-topics, but since both communities have been rather quiet (right now), perhaps they should be consolidated?

Yes. Merge both or redirect one to another. Seems atemu is not active here, but I think I have saw someone by that name in some nix official channel like matrix or discourse or nixpkgs repository. You could ask Lemmy admin as well

Actually, I was thinking !nix would be the better primary candidate, since Nix is sort of the trunk of the ecosystem where NixOS is more of a sturdy branch. Or to use another metaphor, Nix is the umbrella that covers NixOS. However, I understand that the official domain is nixos.org so perhaps it’s more ergonomic to also use this namespace to contain all things Nix.
At any rate, surely it’s not worth splitting hairs over. I’ll let you choose whichever option you think is best and follow suit!
Given that !nix is nearly dead and our sister-community on Reddit also prefers /r/NixOS over /r/Nix, I’d make this the default.
Is there anything on the technical side I need to do to make that happen?

Not that I’m aware of, I think just a pinned post explaining that all future posts should be redirected to !NixOS, and an explainer in the description.
checking two subs is a hassle and lemmy is pretty small and will probably stay that way for a very long time.
Once lemmy will be big enough we can consider splitting it.
IMO the best option is to create a community called nix_and_nixos and use that.
