This gets reported by capitalists as bad news, but isn’t this the goal? Move away from endless consumption, production and discarding. If the population stabilises and shrinks and the demand from people shrinks to something more sustainable, then how do we get through this transition with an economy that only ever relies on “number goes up”.

You’re saying this as if population shrinkage and stabilisation is some guided process and not a catastrophe to all currently living. We’re stuck in capitalism which means people need money to eat and this crisis doesn’t mean humanity is suddenly going to act rationally.

Well duh, if rent and bills are eating up people’s disposable income, they have to cut back on frivolous expenses, who’da thunk it?

We need to keep tightening our purses and vote with our wallets, with the added benefit that less consumption is better for the planet.
