This isn’t at odds with the person you responded to is saying unless I’ve grossly misunderstood them (or you). They are saying that everyone is worthy of the same base of respect until they demonstrate that they are worthy of more. So they’ll show respect to the manager and the intern until the intern demonstrates, through hard work and competence, that they are worthy of more and the nepotism hired and protected incompetent manager will forever stay at a workplace minimum (or vice versa).
So it isn’t ‘we’re all equal as human beings and should be treated as such’, which is a sentiment I think prompted your mention of race, but ‘I’ll show you basic respect until you demonstrate just what level of respect you actually deserve.’ Which unless I’m misunderstanding you is more of less what you are saying; that you’ll show people basic respect, be being polite, until they demonstrate professional achievement worthy of greater respect.
