Lemmy is still small enough that even the most obscure communities will show up on the All feed, which it seems is how a lot of people browse. If you post to your small community, especially during non peak hours, some people will see it.

Sometimes people want a breather, myself included. If there weren’t so many other places to browse that kind of content, we wouldn’t have the rule.
The population on Lemmy is very politically aware and has strong opinions, which is good, however that also means that it’s very easy for any community to become overwhelmed by it and suddenly have little else.

It’s a response to an entirely self-inflicted problem.
It makes me slightly uneasy and sad that this is done for big events, but I also understand why.
I think the knowledge just saps some of the frivolity from what is otherwise a fun, low-stakes outing.
