My iPhone correctly says “Ottawa, Ontario, Canada”, while Google’s library doesn’t return the city?
There was a time when a phone number’s area code and exchange would indicate a pretty constrained geographic area – for a land-line. I don’t think it’s possible to do this kind of “find the geography from a phone number alone” lookup accurately in the modern environment. Whatever API Apple provided got your example number right, sure. But how will you know when it gets one wrong? How can you know how often it gets it wrong? What does it really mean to assign a place to a cell number?
My own phone number consistently gets pegged by these things as “belonging to” a specific town several miles away from where I live, probably because the exchange part of my number is one that used to be associated with that town. But that observation doesn’t produce any kind of useful information today, it’s just misleading.
My Windows 2000 machine had 512MB of RAM. With it I could browse the web, run full-featured word processors, scan images, edit images, play 3D games, edit / compile / debug C and C++ programs, and so on.
If memory serves, my office machine about that time only had 128MB of RAM. It was slower, but it could do just about all of that stuff, too.
I’m not sure there are any broad categories of tasks I use computers for today that I wasn’t already using my Windows 2000 machine for back in 2001 or so.

One thing to bear in mind: These folks are very, very few in number, but they’re making a lot of noise. The foolishness of their choices is getting them a lot of media amplification. They’re infamous. They don’t represent a real trend of “moving to Russia for traditional values.” They’re really just examples of the much more general “doing outrageous things for online clout” phenomenon. They turn their lives into catastrophes for attention. De-influencers? Is there a name for this?

Rove’s whole shtick is turning everything one says and does into a performance of some kind, to misdirect one’s adversaries. I can’t tell you I know what his angle is, what his goal is, but I do feel that listening to him at all is a mistake. The only thing you know for sure is that he is trying to trick you right now.
So, sure, the GOP is where all the neo-Nazis are, today. But why is Rove bringing this up? Why bring it up now, as opposed to at any other moment in the last 10 years? That’s where the trick will be.
Schmitt was a state attorney general. I wonder if he demonstrated the same temperament and care for details in that job that he’s demonstrating in this one? I wonder how many other prosecutors, at municipal and state levels, are just like him?

This is just so completely wrong I don’t know what to say. Have you owned a car? Have you bought a new car? Have you ever sat down and penciled out the numbers to see what you could afford? Have you spent any time budgeting for your household? Have you ever checked out a cost-to-own calculator for cars, of which there are many online? Have you perused any consumer advice on car buying?
Depreciation comes up, to put it mildly.
People who actually buy new cars* – the only people who matter, as far as the market goes – think about this quite a lot, because they’re usually planning to trade in after five years, or three years, or what-have-you. Depreciation is reason schmucks like me can afford an (old) car at all.

“Lossy” and “lossless” are descriptors applied to data compression systems. So no one referred to CDs as “lossless” until MP3 (which is lossy) became popular, because there was nothing to contrast it with. CDs are not compressed at all.
If you buy music on BandCamp, FLAC (lossless) is often (always?) one of the download format options. FLAC is decompressed into a bitstream that matches the original exactly. You can put those files wherever you like.
I figure it this way too, but then after I’ve eaten at the sit-down place the bill turns out to be $80.
