@catloaf @open_mind To follow up on this, after the war there was a long and very successful propaganda campaign to whitewash the legacy of American slavery and its importance in the US civil war.[1] To this day, the Confederacy is heavily mythologized and their generals and leaders are lionized as brave and noble rather than what they were: defenders of brutal industrial slavery. You wouldn’t think a country would have statues of 150-year-old failed traitors outside state buildings, but we do. (They’re starting to come down but it has taken a literal century.)[2] There are many, many people from the south who will insist that the civil war was about the vague notion of “states’ rights” without being specific about what specific rights they wanted,[3] and that’s because this propaganda was embedded in the education system of half the country.

@UrLogicFails Mine go on a corkboard that I hang on the wall. It makes for nice decoration, and I get to admire them whenever I walk past!

A subset of my pins end up on my lanyard when I go to meets/conventions. I have favorites, but I usually rotate between some depending on my mood and what I got recently.

@Gaywallet I have a couple thoughts on this:

1. This seems like a way that device attestation could worm its way further into our devices. Right now Google is trying to watermark AI-generated photos as AI, but you could easily go the other way - if a photo hasn’t been manipulated, it’s signed with a key that is locked down to device attestation. What, your phone is rooted? That’s kinda suspicious - how am I supposed to know your photos are real?

2. Short of that, though, I suspect that the most likely consequence of this is the videos will start being increasingly seen as necessary for true proof, since those are harder to fake - for now, at least. And of course, there will be a lot more misinformation on the internet, especially in the short term while awareness of this catches up.

@HawlSera I do recognize that tomboys, buff women, etc are worth representing, (and we should push for their inclusion) but that’s not what I’m talking about - I mean people who look like “men” but use pronouns other than he/him.

@HawlSera @chloyster I mean, I absolutely know people who use she/her but present very masc, and vise-versa. They may be relatively uncommon, but so are trans people in general and we’re still worth representing. Not to mention non-binary people who have relatively binary gender presentation. Your experience is absolutely not universal.

@snow_bunny Nah, it was Sonos. Which, I guess the app ecosystem is their whole thing - but I didn’t know that at the time. I just wanted a basic sound bar, and the reviews didn’t really mention that all that extra fluff was mandatory.

In retrospect Sonos sucks for a lot of other reasons too, so I guess it was a bullet dodged.

@The_Picard_Maneuver I once bought a TV sound bar that wanted me to download an app, make an account and give it detailed location information just to use it as a wired speaker. I returned it.

@wizardbeard Oh yeah, totally - it’s not like the 1% doesn’t use these things to its advantage. Don’t take my comment as making the mistake of ignoring that. It’s just myopic at best to act like other forms of oppression can be ignored as long as we ensure economic liberation. And a lot of the people spouting that opinion… well, there’s a reason they think bigotry isn’t a problem - they suck.

@cyborganism @GammaGames There’s a particular category of “leftist” who, to put it gently, have a greatly simplified view of the world in which “the only war is class war.” They regard social issues such as anti-racism, feminism, queer liberation as distractions from the “true” cause of bringing about a new economic system - unimportant at best, active interference invented by the ruling class at worst.

Basically, they’re narrow-minded bigots.

@AVincentInSpace @remington The Lemmy devs are infamously difficult to work with. They’ve repeatedly shown an unwillingness to even acknowledge the existence of the many problems that instance admins face. That has been a big driver in Beehaw’s decision to move platforms, not just because of a difference in political views, and they’ve been pretty open about discussing it. You’re way off-base.

@remington There are few creators whose videos I will jump to view the instant they drop, and Lemmino is one of them. This is a pretty interesting subject that I haven’t heard of, despite it apparently being quite well-known.

Tbh, Sanborn not being confident/experienced with math and cryptography kinda tracks with his apparent surprise that expert cryptographers cracked a Vigenere cipher in a couple days rather than follow an obscure breadcrumb trail that’s still unclear, even after knowing the key. For me, K4’s enduring mystery prompts comparison to the Zodiac killer ciphers, which ended up being so difficult to unwind not because they were brilliant ciphers devised by a mastermind, but because the author made a bunch of mistakes. Still, at this point it seems likely that Sanborn has checked his work over multiple times, so maybe there really is just some trick that no one has thought of. He’s clearly eager for it to be solved, so we may know in the coming decades!

@solitaire @erev Jesus, I had completely forgotten “tits or gtfo.” Every now and then I get hit with a reminder of how much more pervasive that kind of thing was as little as 10-20 years ago and it throws me for a loop.
