I self-host my own email, have done so for years. I’ve not gotten pwned. Use an SSH key and a firewall, only expose the ports that should be public, have reasonable access controls, etc, just practise general cybersecurity—it applies to servers too.
I know everyone complains about hosting email. But I’ve not run into major problems. My emails get through spam filters and I have good uptime. It’s also a fun learning experience.
If the authors used the same method to improve GIMP, they’d be introducing a bunch of slop code to GIMP. This code is not going to be of GIMP quality.
I also doubt this will hold a candle to GIMP for the aforementioned reasons. It might appeal to a small audience, but I do not expect it to dethrone GIMP any time soon.

I mainly only buy old (like, over a decade old) laptops off eBay so I’m not affected. I’m not replacing any parts of my main PC till they break. I think the current culture of upgrading just to stay up to date rather than because something doesn’t work anymore is incredibly wasteful, especially given the emissions and human rights abuses in the manufacture of PC parts.

Sure, Europe is an Asian peninsula, whatever, but at least “conventionally” Europe is considered its own continent. The countries in the “Middle East” are conventionally considered to be Asian and the westernmost part of Asia. Everybody, including the people who live there, considers the region a part of Asia. That’s not a disputed thing. So it makes sense to call them West Asia. I suppose if you want to recognise Europe as an Asian peninsula then we’d have to call West Asia something else.
Sure, a lot of school devices don’t have great controls though. I played Minecraft on the school computers. A good chunk of the devices that kids are using to comment on podcasts or whatever, a user will be able to run their own executables on. Some school computers explicitly allow this so they can teach kids to code.

I mean, you can host servers on a laptop. I ran my Minecraft server and a few web apps off my laptop when I was a kid. Had to get my parents to do the port forwarding as I didn’t have access to the router login, but otherwise was quite straightforward. And before someone says “so you needed your parents”, I’m sure some kids can figure out the login/their parents may be using the default login and would not be savvy enough to figure out their kid had set up a port forward.

I’m a cis woman who takes oestrogen because they removed my ovaries; I do so for gendered reasons, there’s a reason why I don’t take testosterone instead which would be an equally valid way of replacing my missing hormones from a physiological perspective. I also shave my face for gendered reasons, because people are a lot more judgemental about women having facial hair than men. Cis men who are born with penises but lose them get phalloplasty. And so on.
When was Ubuntu “lightweight”? I’m not saying it was always bloated, but it was never supposed to be minimalist either. It was just an easy works-out-of-the-box Linux experience.

Other instances like Hexbear explicitly describe themselves as “leftist” and do have a political focus.
Dollars are worth a disproportionate amount compared to currencies in the global south. “Little to no money” in the US is a decent amount of money in other parts of the world. If you’re trying to leave the US rather than enter it, you’re at the relative advantage to most immigrants.
As for more specific advice, it really depends on where you want to move to. If you are a US citizen, your passport will take you almost anywhere in the world.

Yes, it can be a bit involved. I’d say I can spin up a mail server in 1–2 days though provided the OS is already installed and I have a domain name and port 25 isn’t blocked (that’s the main one that tends to be blocked). It may take longer for people who aren’t familiar with mail servers but it’s not some huge operation.
You can just try spinning up a mail server for fun. If it goes badly then just don’t move over your dentist appointments to it. It’s only critical infra if you use it for critical things, which you probably shouldn’t till it’s stable.
