Why I Support Purism, A Tech Company that Respects Digital Rights – Purism

Purism makes premium phones, laptops, mini PCs and servers running free software on PureOS. Purism products respect people's privacy and freedom while protecting their security.

Investigating their manufacturing processes and supply chain does not leave me with warm, fuzzy feels. I also cannot find any info on worker rights, domestically or internationally. Any company that does not list worker wellbeing in their mission statement is suspect in my book.

Thank you very much for pointing this out. As a BIPOC, I always feels so uneasy when companies/projects like this are touted as progressive by leftists.

edit: lol I guess fuck BIPOC who don’t want our people abroad fucked by naive leftists promoting deeply flawed business practices like this, right? "Don’t be naive, brown people will always be our workhorses abroad so stop complaining".

The privileged western white leftist’s digital rights > BIPOC’s human rights, as is tradition. Some things never change. Totally a company leftists should support! (thanks @christian@lemmy.ml for the source).

Good point, yet complex multinational supply chains make this task literally impossible. Computers are made of human suffering and eco-destruction. Even a company like Fairphone whose sole purpose is that of social justice is not even close to success in this matter.

Company? Respects rights? what a joke

Hehe. Although to be fair Purism is a social purpose company not a profit-aiming LLC. Still far off from a workers coop ;)

Here is a good reddit post from a couple years back from a guy who dug into their SPC status.

Thank you very much, the post was very clarifying for me, especially about the SPC status. In the law of my country there is no similar legal status, that was confusing me a lot, since the closest thing we have is a CS cooperative society status.

But apparently from what their (ex) clients/users comment and from certain contradictory information, they use the SPC status for the purposes of a Ponzi scheme.

Stop, stop, you’re ruining the corporate bootlicking!

I can’t support Purism. Not any more. I purchased a Librem 5 from them, they took my money, and they (still) refuse to refund my money for a product they never delivered to me. >$600 they stole from me.

I heard a few people were able to get their money back by contacting the California attorney general. It’s been a scam since the beginning though.

Like 7-10 years ago I used to use the Trisquel forums back when Purism had their first fund drive (for a high-end laptop that was advertised as 100% libre), and Todd Weaver (Purism’s CEO) made a post there about it. A user made a really detailed post on why a lot of the things Purism was promising could not be achieved in the timeframe they had given, and Todd completely ignored every point the guy made and instead wrote a single sentence saying the guy didn’t actually value software freedom or something to that gist. I never understood the technical details tbh, but that exchange left such a sour taste in my mouth anyway.

Everything else I’ve seen has just been downhill from there.

Do you guys think this startup is some kind of unicorn/scam? Until now I have only used its operating system on one of my laptops, which is by far the one that offers the best user experience by default among all the 100% free distros, but the truth is that I have not paid attention to the company’s actions.

I prefer Pop!_OS on my Linux boxes. Plus. System76 is a much more reputable Company.

I haven’t tried contacting the California Attorney General. I think I know what I’m doing on Monday! Thank you for the info/ suggestion.

I was actually pleased with my Librem 15 laptop. The hardware kill-switches for the radios was novel and revolutionary at the time. Which is why I fully supported (and was looking forward to) the Librem 5. Even after the Pine Phone came out cheaper and basically doing the same thing. I still supported the Librem 5.

And to be fair to them some of the early delays did seem legit. But when I demanded a refund and they fed me so much bullshit I had enough.

Fortunately I saved everything so maybe the Cali AG will be able to help me.
