How many of them commonly refer to themselves as Americans?
As many as they want to.
So, a number approaching zero? I’d cede the point if people from other parts of the Americas were wanting to be called American. But they overwhelmingly don’t.
As an American I support this position 100%. I’d be next to them saying the same if I could afford anything beyond scraping by daily.
