Starmer needs to change his position. Labour is so afraid of being seen as anti semitic they have lost sight of Israel being a state not a religion.
the problem is exactly as you say. On the one hand you cant deny there was an issue which has been largely sorted, but now ‘being seen’ as anti semetic is an ongoing, rolling snowball which is dangerous because surely it shouldnt matter about perception, only what you actually do and have a record for. So the trap Starmer is falling into is, hes being forced to change position because his party cant be seen to be voting against their own consituency members wishes on this significant point of principle. This is not a pragmatic error, its a political one.
I personally think hes been right about the pragmatic side of things. Israel has given in to short pauses, which Labour called correctly. The wider issue is much more complicated until the hostages are recovered. Nice to see Clare Short in the papers again, I went on the Iraq marches in 2002-3 and the arguments were much the same only we had the majority party and a popular PM. That issue largely killed the grassroots Labour party in traditional heartlands, a party commited to peace and justice for all snuffed out at the branch level.
Seems a pathetic hill to die on. There is nothing the Labour party can do to invoke a ceasefire in Gaza. Israel cares nothing for the UK or its opinions, let alone the opinions of an opposition party.
Even the US president couldn’t convince them
The US just signed a bill to increase military aid to Israel. Seems like a roundabout way to convince them to cease hostilities.
The Labour Party’s worst enemy is the Labour Party.
I mean, for fuck’s sake. They’re 20 points ahead in the polls, they have to literally do nothing to win the next election. And yet here they are fighting over some shit we can’t even do anything about.
The electorate know we can’t do anything about it and no one is going to change their vote based on a declared position either way (certainly not enough to make a difference anyway), but they will change their vote if they just see a bunch of children arguing with each other.
Good. Fucking cowards the lot of them.
These fucks expelled Corbyn and coup’ed the party because he supported Palestine and rightly called Israel a genocidal apartheid state (and he is a socialist).
They will support Israel to the end. They are neoliberal hawks, who want to be the Democrats so bad.
I’m baffled by the comments here. We moan continuously that our politicians are only out for themselves, and then when they actually stand up for something they believe in (with a risk that it will actively harm both their party, and their own personal prospects) we moan that they’re being foolish and should tow the company line.
Resigning from your party over a difference in opinion on something we have zero control over is just tedious posturing.
Starmer is an Israeli puppet.
