It only winds up being suicide by border guard if someone is trying to escape, not so much so if someone is trying to get in. Not too many people want to go to North Korea if they can help it.

I wonder if his angle is to be taken in by North Korea in the hopes of being used as a poster child for North Korean propaganda. Considering he was on his way to getting flown back to the states for further disciplinary action after getting out of a Korean prison, he might assume that’s his best bet for a decent life since he might be assuming North Korea will pamper him so that they can use him to talk about how terrible the U.S. And South Korea are.

Back when I was in Korea, people that wound up in a Korean jail usually didn’t get shipped back to the states; it was more likely they’d be stripped of rank, locked down to the military base, and put on permanent detail for the rest of their time there (think "spending any free time scrubbing toilets and picking up trash around the base).

Things like serious assaults on local nationals could land someone a flight back though, so it’s very possible that whatever he did was bad enough that he thinks his life would be over if he went back to the states, so I guess that might be his play. How it’s going to pan out for him is another matter though - he may be treated well by the North Korean government (from what I’ve heard they tend to pamper their foreign mouthpieces to keep them placated and compliant), or he may wind up a bargaining chip for foreign aid from the U.S. depending on how low their resources are.

Mind you, I’m hardly an expert on the relations and current situation in North Korea, just a guy that was stationed over in South Korea for a few years in a non-intelligence capacity, so take all of this as idle speculation.

I like this one quite a lot more, thank you for sharing it! I think it also helped me realize what it was about version 1 that put me off: It wasn’t what I’m going to call the “ping pong note bending,” because that was still pretty clearly present here, it was the way it was used for what felt like every sustained note instead of as an accent like it is in version 2. Rather than being the majority of the notes, those bends feel more like they’re being used to wrap up musical phrases in version 2, so it flows together more cleanly to my ear.

Massively impressive and talented cover! I’m personally not a fan of the way the bends “bounce” (I don’t know the right term - the way the bends repeatedly go up and down in pitch), but that’s entirely a matter of personal preference since it’s a fundamental technique when playing this instrument. I do think it’s really neat how the bends were kind of used to replace the shredding from the original song though; super creative and not something I would have ever thought of. I may not put this in my personal playlist, but I loved seeing it and respect the concept and execution. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, I’ve been there. It’s just so aggravating, but I try to find comfort in knowing that at least I wasted a small bit of their precious bandwidth!

I hadn’t even considered the quantity of ads on those sites… Any time I accidentally find one, it’s a long column of text that starts off with a bunch of filler roughly related to whatever I was searching for, maybe a couple of lines with an answer (right or wrong is a different matter), then breaks down into a bunch of self-contradicting nonsense. I just don’t see the ads because of uBlock Origin, so I never see how bad they are. AI generated sites are completely aggravating.

For more mainstream music, I have to put forward “By the Way” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and “Demon Days” by the Gorillaz. For a slightly deeper cut, “The Protomen” (a.k.a. “Act I”) and “Act II: The Father of Death” by the Protomen. I usually jump through shuffled music or skip songs, but these albums are all ones that I can listen to straight through.

He’s got an interesting set of styles that I have trouble categorizing, but has grown on me ever since I found him a couple of years ago.

As someone who registered under Beehaw (and thus, a potentially biased party), Beehaw isn’t exactly looking to be a 1-to-1 replacement for Reddit from my understanding. It’s more looking to create an actual community, similar to how online communities were once upon a time. I don’t foresee pro-Russia sentiment taking hold there (especially since they apparently defederated with Lemmygrad, which is where a lot of tankies live), but I understand the concern.

For what it’s worth, the Socialism community is essentially a transplant of the subreddit /r/LeftWithoutEdge, which I would lurk from time to time while I was still on Reddit, and it was one of the few leftist subreddit where I didn’t feel shunned for being a veteran. A lot of other leftist subreddits would do stuff like pre-emptively ban anyone who posted in a military subreddit, so I think Beehaw’s Socialism community has a great foundation to work off of at the very least.

This is exactly it. They don’t want freedom of speech, they want freedom from the consequences of their speech. They don’t like that the people affected by their speech have a voice too, and that the hateful rhetoric they spew into the world is finally being pushed back on. To the privileged, equality feels like oppression.

It’s unfortunate, but I think it’s because in this specific instance, there is a clear and immediate impact on people’s lives. Meanwhile, climate change is a gradual change over a longer period of time and a much larger area. Climate change also requires action beyond stopping visiting a website and actual cooperation among the entire human race. It’s short-sighted, but it’s also an example of how hard it is to get people to care about things that don’t clearly and immediately affect them (see also: people who are militant homophobes until someone close to them comes out).

Thank you for solving a mystery I’ve had since I heard of Lemmy! I kept hearing about a supposed tankie problem, but never saw anything about it. Now I’m even more thankful about choosing Beehaw; I have leftist leanings, but tankies definitely rub me the wrong way.

I think the federated approach Lemmy is taking can both help with that and exacerbate it. While it’s easy to push fringe views, it’s also easy to quarantine/block off servers that are going in that direction. I’m not sure what tools are available for doing that in Lemmy, but I don’t imagine it would be hard to block users from a Voat-like server if push comes to shove. It winds up coming down to the culture and values of the server you’re on, and if those go in a direction you don’t like you can also go elsewhere. Sort of like how there were bots that would pre-emptively block people that post in specific subreddit, but more granular control so you don’t wind up with situations like where someone would post in /r/conservative to argue against misinformation, then find themselves blocked from leftist subreddits. Here, if you’re a member of a leftist Lemmy server, that’s part of your identity so it’d be easier to see situations like that and prevent collateral damage from blocking members of the alt-right server from brigading. The only issue there is that it also becomes easier to set up echo chambers, so there’s a fine line to walk. I’m rambling a bit, but hopefully I’m making sense.

This was the moment that cemented my choice to move away from Reddit. My plan initially was to see how the blackouts would play out, but this showed even more clearly than the initial thread about Apollo’s woes with Reddit just how garbage the decision-making at Reddit is.

This is my concern. That being said, I don’t think that’s quite as likely to happen because the reason for Voat’s creation was fundamentally different. The Lemmy exodus is because of API changes and the treatment of Apollo’s creator, while Voat was created as a result of a crackdown on hate subreddit (/r/fatpeoplehate was the big one, but this was years ago so I might be misremembering things).

That being said, I do specifically remember that the driving force behind the Voat push was “free speech.” I’m pretty sure we know who screams the loudest about free speech at the expense of all else, and it looks like Beehaw at least was created with the core idea of being against that crowd. So, while I can’t speak for Lemmy as a whole, I’m trying to at least be optimistic about Beehaw, since the reason for the exodus is completely different from the Voat exodus,meaning the migrants will have a different composition.
