  • I know this thread is a tad old but I’ve been considering a framework for the family laptop for a while. Problem is stocking and this recent 16 model run also had 13 orders run too. I won’t pay for a unit months in advance. It ruins certain protections from the merchant (like failure to deliver).

Instead I got a thinkpad t480 for like 400 bucks. It will do fine as a laptop mostly used for chrome, paying bills or zoom calls etc.

  • My trait is I think cars are too digital and should be analogue. Giant touch panels are distracting and have generally bad UI design. You can control an A/C with 3 dials, 4 if you have zones and don’t need to look down at all. Pinnacle of engineering.

I will never own a car that has features behind a paywall or that I can’t directly control. Computer cars are fine as long as I have root.

  • Interesting. I took MDMA is in college once. It wasnt a game changer or anything.

Now LSD. The one time I did that, it definitely altered the “lens” i viewed the world in, for the better. I did this with some friends to make sure it wasnt a bad trip, but mostly in solitude. Im not sure that it really changes much of my political leanings, but i did have some deep introspective thought and it did affect how I viewed others and the world, and generally in a more empathetic way.

That said, after having some friends that arguably abused it, i avoided too many more further interactions with it which was good. Because around the 4th time I did it, i was in a bad way, and had an awful trip, which turned me off to most mind altering substances for a while.

  • As per most tech things, though, I don’t think there’s a good end-to-end guide out there (lots of piecemeal ones, though) and having good research skills and being able to fill in the gaps in guides yourself is pretty important.

Yeah for sure. For most non-techy folks using one of the arrs setups or even plex has a pretty steep curve.

It’s why Netflix will continue to make subs.

I think what’s missing from this article is they have had a show or two lately that have been solid. Ie: the Diplomat. And that will drive up subs. But not sure it has the staying power. Folks will flip back to something else when another service drops something good.

  • What they don’t explain is that you need two accounts (or more) for these to work.

    A Usenet account.

An indexer account that is basically a search engine.

You also need a download app like nzbget. And ofc you setup an account on that and plug it into sonarr.

And an account for the nas or storage if it’s not local.

Sonarr searches the index, finds the files, talks to nzbget and says “download that shit for me and put it together”. Nzbget uses the Usenet account to fetch the stuff, assembles the parts and tells sonarr I’m done. Sonarr then renames it and puts it on your nas.

It’s admittedly fairly abstract, even for someone seasoned in systems admin work.

  • I wouldn’t feel too bad. That’s a new chnage that occurred during the Trump Admin. We transferred to a compatible 529 when it did chnage.I think Utah or something. But I was concerned like you prior to that (we just didn’t have much put in). No way you can predict the future.

Definitely will have a similar convo with my kids and impress that if they do want to go to college, stick to degrees that give you skills and certifications coming out (ie: engineering, finance, nursing etc etc ) not something like political science.

  • Imho there should be restrictions on foriegn nationals buying property and land (in any country). Even in Canada there are issues with wealthy Chinese nationals buying up housing and property at premium rates and outbidding locals, which is spiking the values heavily.

Similar is occurring in Florida and elsewhere, where outside entities and corporations are buying up much of the housing market at premium rates well above what the local economies can sustain. They then turn around and try to rent them out at a super high rate. It’s predatory.

  • For us it was the best way to not adjust but still keep that going to the kids future. And we don’t really notice it since it’s already accounted for.

That said we also signed up for that type of plan that can be used for trade schools and the like. College degrees are flooding the market and becoming devalued. It’s possibly that money can be better spent on a specific skill if the kid so wants to pursue it.

And if they want to go to a fancy private or out of state, they will need scholarships or a way to fund.

I fully recognize this may not be enough to pay for all of college, but at least should cover a very good chunk of it. And again, without really making a change to our cost of living or income:expenses.
