    Could it be that it’s using less power as it charges? ie automatically shuts off power hungry features while charging?

    Good data is so hard to get.

    What I’d actually care about is how many minutes of usage does 30 minutes of charging get me in both standard and ekeing out as much life as I can mode.

  • I’d probably start designing and building a rolling ball clock/ sculpture, then hit some sort of obstacle and switch to making a self recirculating eddy current tube, get frustrated and try to design and build an electronically commutated counter rotating propeller driver, get frustrated and try to build a garage sized 3d printer, get frustrated and try to build a delayed action door closer get frustrated and try to build a co-planar compound cycloidal reducer, get frustrated and then forget my wife’s anniversary until 4pm the day before.

  • Would this more intricate engineering result in a noticeably better product for the average guitarist? Would it just be a niche curiosity for audiophiles and engineers?

    This is AskSCIENCE so it’s not surprising that you would approach the musings from this perspective.

    But OPs idea is about the intersection of science and art. I think the question is really: Would some of these ideas result in an output signal that was controllable in a new way?

    Imo this modification would empower an artist to interact with their guitar in a novel and creative way? Do I think we’ll see mass adoption, no, but I think there are definitely people out there that would be interested in playing a guitar with pickups like this. Even if it’s just part of their creative process.

  • I think OP is interested in the role of oscillation planes because with an acoustic guitar, exciting a string parallel (lateral) to the guitar vs perpendicular to the guitar has a perceptible difference in tone.

    OP believes that this difference isn’t captured by common electric guitar pickups.

    From what I’ve read in this thread common pickups measure the speed of the string, basically considering both planes of vibration the same. But an acoustic guitar responds more to the perpendicular oscillations than the lateral oscillations. (Because the perpendicular plane oscillations tends to work the bridge/soundboard, and push air towards and away from the sound hole).

    Although I agree that ultimately the string’s oscillation is pretty much circular/cylindrical/bi-conical, but I suspect there is a significant transient effect that could be explored/exploited with redesigned pickups.

    I’m also curious if it would be possible to use a string with a [section of] non-circular cross section to allow the [creation and] detection of torsional vibrations.

    I look at your diagram and see:

    ϴ= L/(L+R)

    And

    2π-ϴ = L/R

    I solved those (using substitution, then the quadratic formula) and got

    L= π-1 ± √(1+π²) ~= 5.44 or -1.16

    Whether or not a negative length is meaningful in this context is an exercise left to the reader

    Giving (for L=5.44):

    ϴ~= 0.845 ~~48.4°

    I’m surprised that it solved to a single number, maybe I made a mistake.

  • If he comes back to the North, he would be tortured&executed with his family.

    Are you basing this statement on anything other than your impression that the North Korean regime is cruel for the sake of being cruel, and everyone in the military and government is incompetent?

    It might be true, but it’s also possible that the North Koreans would use it as the obvious propaganda coup it is and send him on speaking tours all over the country/world.

    It’s also quite possible that he’s mentally unwell and isn’t making rational choices. Or that he’s trying to escape an abusive situation.

    Don’t get me wrong, the North Korean government is not good, I’m just saying that the assumption he’ll be tortured and executed underestimates them.

    PS. When you say “comes back” it means that you are in that place. So your sentence implies that you’re in North Korea. I’m sure you meant “goes back”.

    Not who you’re responding to but I must vehemently disagree. In English, which doesn’t have a centralized governing body, the correct way of pronouncing/spelling something depends on your intention and expected audience. If your intended audience is English speakers then the correct spelling is probably octopi or octopuses, whichever you believe will cause the least confusion/distraction (surely it varies regionally).

    However, usually my intention is to portray my unfathomably superior knowledge and intellect, so the correct spelling/pronunciation in this case is: octopodes (which I think he had listed but ironically got ‘corrected’ to ‘octopuses’).
