Software developers experience this daily, except without the fun drinking and partying parts.
- write code & check it in
- go home
- maybe get some sleep, maybe
- go to work the next day
- get mad at whoever checked in that code
The worst code I have ever seen, the truly horrible stuff that gives me nightmares was written by myself six months ago.
Oof, six months ago code is the worst. It’s still close enough to your current style that it’s undeniably yours and you can vaguely remember writing it, but long enough ago that you’ve improved a decent amount since then. So the mistakes or bad practice hurts the maximum amount.
I have this same feeling when I make music. When I go look at my old projects I barely recognize them. Organization goes a loooooong way.

On God
There’s an argument that if you are not ashamed by your old code, that means you didn’t progress as a developer.
I am my own worst enemy
But six months ago, it was the greatest code you’ve ever written.
Never had that feeling in my career. Then again, I didn’t work at places which chased deadlines instead of pursuing clean code
Care to share what industry you’re in?
Not programming anymore, changed career path. Before, I used to be in fintech, CRM. Last job was healthcare greenfield as a “consultant”
Ah, gotcha, sorry I thought you were talking about your works software development priorities
No, I was talking about the previous jobs I was at.
Idk about you but there is definitely substances in the mix there somewhere js 🤷
Just find a employer that has a happy hour everyday with free alcohol!
AKA clopening. Usually with a couple of hours sleep, but the sleepless version is all too common as well

Sometimes I miss the insane time in my life when I was working in restaurants.
But a lot of times I don’t.
The lack of cocaïne in this story makes it less believable.

When I waited tables I called it a lifestyle not a job. Shit like this is why.
