Maybe it’s just because I got over my DT phase a long time ago, but this song is nothing new to me. Just the same elements, structure, and style as most of their songs from the past decade and a half. I was expecting something fresh with Portnoy’s return, just like how the first and second (except Sherinian) albums of each of their keyboardists was groundbreaking and refreshing. Of course we have yet to hear the rest of the album, and this is probably generic for the purposes of a single release.
I’m getting an impression that Jordan Rudess has not been up to the task for years now. This song could be carried by Kevin Moore easily despite how boring Petrucci is now.
