I did this with a shovel when I was a teen. I’d completely forgot until now. Ugh.

If you do see an animal like that, bring it to a vet. Don’t try to treat it yourself unless you know what you are doing /have some experience doing that.

To be fair putting a half dead animal out of its misery is definitely the right thing to do.
