Also worth noting

Elsewhere in the AJP survey, 83 percent of respondents were not aware that calves were removed from their mothers within 24 hours of birth. This is standard practice in farms

Looking closer at the survey, that’s maybe true for the calf separation question, but the first question about impregnation is more straightforward

Before taking this survey, were you aware that dairy cows are impregnated annually to enable milk production?

    Yes, I was aware [48%]

    No, I wasn’t aware [52%]

(Removed my highlighting of bit about calf separation from the body because that question wording is a little poor)

Were you aware that cows are impregnated every 324.56 days?

I think even that question is confusing. I would honestly answer No. I don’t know the gestational period of a cow exactly or how often they need to be impregnated to produce milk. I’d assume less often, wet nurses produce milk long after impregnation. It doesn’t mean I don’t know about impregnation.

I looked it up and apparently Their lactation cycles are only 305days which feels like a short period of time for such a large animal. my family kept goats and as long as you kept milking them they could go well over 6 months and they were tiny compared to a cow.
