I understand fully the developer who wants to get paid for his work and wants to end free support and it seems to be that this bait and switch tactics might work in the short run if the software is widely adopted.

Not sure how it will work out in the long run though - will companies start to pay up for the software or will they start creating their one closed source clones with subpar quality. We will see.
