Anything that becomes mainstream is gonna be destroyed by the censors. In India Telegram’s existence would be in jeopardy if they don’t follow the stringent rules here.

No actually, once you register with an Indian number, no matter what server you access it from, it won’t let you access material which are banned in India.

Yes, actually you do have to pay for it. Also, to answer your other questions, no, we can’t register with a VOiP number like Google Voice or TextNow.

Telegram has never been a secure option as you’re granting the keys to your data to third party to the intended recipients. Your data is basically leaked by default to Telegram’s admins.
I would recommend Signal to replace SMS/MMS and Matrix for IRC/Discord/Telegram.
Telegram is a public forum first, messenger second. Signal is just a 1-1 messenger (with group function as extra) and not a public forum. I can equate Whatsapp to Twitter, by this logic. People use this BS logic everytime for some reason.

I’d also add Jami to the recommended list, even though it is a bit buggy.
Nobody uses Jami, XMPP and Matrix are whole lot better. IRC has a massive userbade.
Matrix and IRC can exist at the same time tho.
For messaging, I recommend Matrix.
For sailing on the high seas, I think I2P is good.

this shit is run almost for free, from the money durov saved on his school lunches, using it as a cdn will break a good service for everyone, including the vast majority of people who just use it because it’s a good messaging service

You aware if they wanted to stop piracy they would just limit its functionalities right? They know better about their app than anyone here. In any case, that is just another reason why e2e should be default on Telegram.
limiting functionality to curb piracy would also limit that functionality for regular people, who want to use it for legitimate purposes, which is why i’m asking ppl to please not use telegram for piracy
