I’m on a Galaxy S10, and I really want a more privacy-respecting app than the included one. I tried FairEmail, and while it seems nice, it was extremely overwhelming and cluttered for me. Is there anything of similar quality that’s simpler to use interface-wise?

K-9 mail is the go-to mail app on Android. It supports a wide variety of features, but doesn’t look too cluttered and even supports PGP encryption. Currently can’t think of any other better mail client for Android.

K9 and FairEmail are the too recommandation for Android. You can also use the official client of a trusted provider such as TutaNota, PortonMail etc

K-9 mail is the de facto standard of Open Source mail apps.

Just did: this is fantastic! Just wish I could remove my phone’s default e-mail app, but that’s unfortunately out of my hands, as is removing the Samsung Internet Browser. 🙃

There’s a good news for you. Have you tried removing system bloatwares with ADB? All you need is just a PC/laptop. And it isn’t very hard either. There’s tons of step by step tutorials out there even on YouTube. Best luck

I’ll have to try it asap; I’ve been recommended it on here once before, and just haven’t gotten around to it because of being temporarily bedridden.

You should installert Lineage OS with minimal Gapps installation or MicroG. Your phone will work almost like normal android and all bloatware will be removed.

I’m just not super tech savvy, so it’s a bit intimidating. I’ll look into it, though; I’m sick of Samsung’s default bloatware trash.

I understand. Just let me know if you need any help. You should def go that way. Will also increase your battery life (no shock).

Delta Chat is so underrated. You have to go in the settings to “enable” regular emails though which might be a deal breaker for people who just want to input their username and password and never touch any settings beyond that.

Delta Chat is really cool. I love how it takes the universal standard of email and allows you to use it for short form messages. Although, I haven’t really used Delta recently.

FairEmail is overwhelming at first but if you persevere you’ll find a template close to K-9 and much more logical. It took me a while to properly get into FairEmail but now I think I couldn’t go back to K-9.

I removed a lot of icons I don’t need, made some lines more readable by adjusting the font size, using the solarized theme. The configuration UI can be a bit unintuitive at times but it allows a lot of customisation (it reminds me of the KDE settings UI, which I find uselessly complicated but working). And in the end, FairEmail has far far more options than K-9 for handling your emails, taking care of spam, checking security, etc.

You think FairEmail is too cluttered but like K9? 🤔

K9 is the most insane mail client, it’s got hundreds of settings! I was so happy to ditch K9 when I found FairEmail.

With the recent UI overhaul I actually think that K9 became much more accessable and modern (than FairEmail).

Yes, but K9 AFAIK only supports IMAP/SMTP, so a lot of SaaS email services (especially those hosted by Microsoft that are used by many companies) will not work with it.

In that case one is tied to the particular app anway. Or does FairEmail also support Active Directory or something alike?

mutt in ssh…? but really if you want something “privacy-respecting” you may consider dropping android altogether. (hint: pinephone and other true-(GNU)-linux phones! yay!)
